Chapter 17 - Richard Comes Home

Richard served seven years and eight months of nine year sentence with credits and transition.

He was sixty five.

Gray.

Lean.

No expensive suit at release.

He moved into supervised apartment.

His business was gone.

Henderson Strategic Ventures dissolved during restitution.

He retained retirement funds exempt/legitimate and modest proceeds after settlements.

Not poor.

Not powerful.

He requested meeting.

I waited six months.

Then agreed.

Neutral office.

Amelia no longer needed but I brought therapist? Mediator.

Tyler did not come.

Richard stood.

“Chloe.”

“Dad.”

First time word in years.

He started:

“I’m sorry.”

I raised hand.

“Specific.”

He nodded.

“I used Grandma’s signature stamp without permission.”

“Yes.”

“I accepted a fake co trustee amendment.”

“Created?”

He swallowed.

“I asked my attorney at time to draft. I applied Mom’s stamp.”

There.

He forged core.

“Did attorney know?”

“He believed Mom approved. I lied.”

Attorney long retired/dead? Could not charge maybe statute, but confession.

Then:

“I copied your signatures.”

“Yes.”

“I moved scholarship.”

“Yes.”

“I used trust to fund Blue Heron.”

“Yes.”

“I lied when I told you scholarship collapsed.”

“Yes.”

“I used money for Tyler.”

“Yes.”

“He didn’t know.”

“I know.”

“Did you resent him after?”

“No.”

Richard nodded.

“Thank you.”

Then funeral.

“I threw book because I knew.”

“Yes.”

“I wanted dirt cover it.”

“Yes.”

“I shoved you.”

“Yes.”

He cried.

“I’m sorry.”

Then Grandma.

“Did you love her?”

“Yes.”

“Why threaten access?”

“Because it worked.”

No excuse.

That sentence was terrible and true.

Then:

“Did she forgive?”

“I don’t know.”

He cried harder.

Then:

“Why did you think it was yours?”

He sat.

“My father built machine company. When he created trust for you before you were born, I felt replaced.”

There.

By unborn daughter.

“He put two hundred fifty thousand aside for baby before he gave me help for expansion.”

Maybe he had asked Grandpa loan.

Frank refused due risky venture.

Then Chloe trust.

Richard felt father chose granddaughter.

“So you took it back.”

“I told myself.”

Then:

“When Tyler came, I thought I was evening things.”

“You could use your money.”

“Yes.”

“Why mine?”

“Because yours felt like evidence Dad trusted you more.”

This was emotional core.

Not need.

Inheritance as love score.

Then:

“Was Grandma’s thrift because you took?”

“No. She had enough. She was always like that.”

Good.

“Did you destroy her financially?”

“No.”

“Emotionally?”

Richard looked away.

“Yes.”

He knew.

Then:

“What do you want now?”

“To know you.”

I said:

“No.”

He flinched.

Then:

“Not yet.”

Maybe.

“I can accept.”

Could he?

We would see.

I allowed one letter twice yearly.

No calls.

No gifts.

He agreed.

Then Tyler met separately.

Harder.

Tyler had adored.

He yelled.

“You made me the reason.”

Richard:

“I know.”

“You made Chloe think I stole her life.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“I wanted you loyal.”

There.

Tyler left.

Months.

Eventually resumed.

No immediate reunion.

Then Susan?

Richard and Susan divorced. They did not reconnect.

Good.

Then Richard found work.

Small warehouse consulting? Convicted financial fraud, fiduciary restrictions. He could work supervised operations not money.

He became dispatch coordinator for local freight company.

Irony.

He did honest hours.

No founder.

Then first Christmas after release, he sent me card.

No check.

No money.

Just:

Merry Christmas. I will not call.

May you like

That was respect.

I kept.
