Chapter 24 - The Birthday Table

I was eighty when Ava recreated no party.

She invited close family for my birthday.

No giant cake.

No luxury house.

Emma, now teenager, decorated.

Nicole came.

Lucas.

Ava.

No parents.

I sat at table.

Someone handed soda.

Emma opened without asking.

Ava gasped theatrically:

“Permission!”

Everyone laughed.

Then stopped because old story hovered.

I laughed first.

“Take the soda.”

Emma looked confused.

Ava explained later maybe.

No need make every moment sacred.

Then after cake, Ava brought a small box.

Inside:

My retired colonel insignia.

I had given to her years ago.

“Why back?”

“Emma wants one day.”

Emma:

“I like shiny.”

I said:

“Take.”

No symbolic burden.

Then Nicole gave a copy of Eli’s corrected death certificate? That would be awful birthday. No. She gave photo album.

Good.

Then Ava asked:

“Mom, do you ever think if we didn’t go to Grandpa’s birthday, none of this would happen?”

“Yes.”

“Wish?”

“I wish you never got hurt.”

“Then Eli?”

“I wish truth came another way.”

Good.

Never gratitude for harm.

Then:

“Do you blame yourself for telling me we’d leave after cake?”

That line from seed haunted.

I had.

For years.

“No.”

Finally.

“I made a normal parenting decision. Richard made dangerous one.”

Ava nodded.

“I never blamed.”

I knew.

Then Emma asked:

“What happened after cake?”

Ava looked at me.

I said:

“Long story.”

Emma:

“We have time.”

We told age-appropriate full story.

No sensational.

When done, Emma asked:

“What should I do if adult scares my kid someday?”

“You leave.”

Ava answered before me.

Then:

“And call for help.”

I added.

Then Nicole:

“And save video.”

We laughed.

Then I said:

“But first, take care of child. Evidence second.”

This was family wisdom now.

Not vengeance.

Care first.

Then truth.

May you like

Then process.

Then whatever relationship survives.
