Chapter 8 - What Adrian Knew

Adrian’s lawyers advised him not to answer.
He did anyway.
Not alone.
Recorded proffer.
Counsel present.
No immunity promised.
He admitted Graham told him:
“Elena cannot reach Mara tomorrow with those files.”
Adrian asked:
“What are you going to do?”
Graham answered:
“Handle the car.”
Adrian claimed he believed Graham meant take the keys, disable ignition, or arrange a tow.
“Did you ask?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“I did not want to know.”
That sentence mattered.
Not direct sabotage.
Deliberate avoidance.
Adrian continued.
“I went to the garage because I wanted the dashcam card.”
“Why?”
“Because Elena had started recording conversations.”
“Did you remove it?”
“Yes.”
There.
The visible dashcam card disappeared because Adrian took it.
“What did you do with it?”
“Destroyed it.”
“How?”
“Broke it and threw it into the fireplace.”
“Why?”
“It had me admitting I hit Daniel.”
My breathing slowed.
He destroyed evidence before my crash.
Not of sabotage.
Of the seventeen year old cover up.
Then:
“When did you leave the garage?”
“After Graham came down.”
“Did you see Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“Did you see tools?”
“No.”
“Did Graham say anything?”
“He told me to go upstairs.”
“And you did.”
“Yes.”
“When Elena left next morning, did you know her car had been tampered with?”
“No.”
“Did you warn her?”
“I texted her to take the Range Rover.”
“Why?”
“Because the pedal felt soft before any of this.”
“Did you physically stop her?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“She hated being controlled.”
I almost laughed.
He had spent months controlling me after the crash.
But before it, apparently my stubborn independence irritated him more than it frightened him.
Then Maya asked:
“When did you learn the brake line was cut?”
“Hospital.”
“From police?”
“From Graham.”
Everyone stopped.
Police had not publicly disclosed the cut line that early.
“How did Graham know?”
Adrian looked down.
“He said Caleb had messed up.”
That connected Graham directly.
“What did you do?”
“Nothing.”
“Why?”
“He said if I exposed Caleb, the Daniel files would come out and Dad would be charged, I would be charged, Whitmore Industries would collapse, and Elena would still have brain damage.”
My stomach turned.
“So you protected him.”
“Yes.”
“Then what?”
“I told the doctors Elena had been confused before the crash.”
“Was she?”
“No.”
There.
“You lied.”
“Yes.”
“To make her less credible.”
“Yes.”
“Did Graham tell you to?”
“Yes.”
“Did you have to obey?”
“No.”
That answer was the first time Adrian sounded like an adult.
Then Maya asked about the five million dollar settlement.
Adrian looked toward his attorney.
Then answered.
“My father suggested it.”
“Why five?”
“He said it was enough to give Elena security and close everything.”
“Did you know it matched the original Daniel contingency fund?”
“Yes.”
“Did Charles know Daniel survived?”
“I believed he did until court.”
That mattered.
Adrian had not known his father was also deceived.
Graham kept everyone separated by giving each person a slightly different story.
Charles thought Daniel died.
Adrian thought Charles knew Daniel survived but chose silence.
Margaret suspected but never knew.
Daniel believed his family had abandoned him knowingly.
Graham stood in the middle collecting fees.
Isolation was the mechanism.
Then Adrian said:
“I deserve whatever happens to me.”
I did not answer.
Mara later asked:
“Do you believe him?”
“About what?”
“That he did not know the brakes were cut.”
“I believe the evidence makes it possible.”
“That is not the same.”
“No.”
Our divorce case proceeded separately.
I did not need attempted murder to leave him.
He had destroyed evidence.
Participated in an old hit and run cover up.
Lied to doctors.
Used my injury to discredit me.
Pressured me to sign a false crash confession.
Marriage did not require the worst possible crime before I could say enough.
Then an independent neurologist, Dr. Sarah Klein, completed my new evaluation.
No Whitmore referral.
No family collateral interviews.
She reviewed imaging, rehabilitation, testing.
Conclusion:
Moderate traumatic brain injury with improving memory retrieval.
No evidence of psychosis.
No evidence of global incapacity.
No evidence that Elena lacks ability to make legal or financial decisions.
Memory gaps remain.
Specific recollections require corroboration.
Exactly.
My brain could be injured and my reasoning intact.
The two ideas had never been mutually exclusive.
We filed the report.
Charles’s public claim that I was delusional began collapsing.
Then Graham’s lawyers attacked something else.
The Daniel records.
They argued Daniel’s privacy outweighed media frenzy and that Graham had acted to protect a vulnerable child from Charles and Adrian.
Some of that might even contain truth.
Charles had covered the accident.
Adrian had caused it.
Returning Daniel to them at eight may not have been safe.
The problem was what happened later.
When Daniel became an adult and asked for his identity.
When his mother begged for truth.
When Graham kept charging fees.
When I found out.
Protection became captivity when the person being protected asked to leave.
Then Canadian records revealed Daniel had tried contacting Adrian three years earlier.
Email.
Subject:
I think I am your brother.
Sent to Adrian’s public company address.
Corporate spam filter quarantined it.
Never delivered.
But someone opened it manually.
User account:
GWHITMORE FOUNDATION REVIEW.
Graham.
He saw Daniel trying to reach Adrian.

And deleted the message.
Continue to the next part: Daniel tried to contact Adrian years ago, but Graham intercepted the email before Adrian ever saw it, proving he was still actively preventing the brothers from finding each other.
