Chapter 3 - The Woman with My Face

The verification video showed my face.
My voice.
My pale pink gown.
Even the torn fabric near my shoulder.
The woman sat inside my penthouse office and read a statement transferring Bennett Capital authority to Ryan.
The image looked convincing until Hale slowed it.
The reflection in the window did not move with the body.
One blink repeated twice.
The burn beneath my ribs appeared on the wrong side.
A synthetic image.
Someone used Brooke’s recording and photographs from the apartment cameras to create it within minutes.
The submission came from the Mercer Urban executive network.
User authorization: Wallace Mercer.
Hale blocked the transfer, but the attempt proved the family had expected resistance.
“They prepared the system before dinner,” I said.
“Yes.”
“How long have they been collecting my voice?”
Hale looked toward Ryan’s confiscated phone records.
“At least eighteen months.”
Ryan had encouraged me to use the penthouse voice controls.
Lights.
Music.
Temperature.
Security.
Every command became a clean audio sample.
He called it convenience.
Diane asked me to record birthday messages for distant relatives I never met.
Brooke filmed every gathering.
They had been collecting material capable of recreating me.
The doctors ordered overnight observation.
The burn itself was painful but stable.
The greater concern was stress and early contractions.
I lay beneath the fetal monitor while Hale explained Bennett Capital.
My mother, Eleanor Bennett, founded a data storage company during the early internet boom.
She sold most of it before I finished college and placed the proceeds inside a private holding trust.
She taught me that wealth should create choices, not servants.
After she died, I became beneficiary.
Hale remained trust officer until my thirtieth birthday.
Ryan met me seven months before that transition.
I had never connected the dates.
“Did he know who I was before we met?”
“We are investigating.”
Ryan claimed we met accidentally at a technology conference.
He approached after hearing me speak on a marketing panel.
Later, he said he had never heard of Bennett Capital.
His phone archive showed otherwise.
Three weeks before the conference, Wallace sent him a file titled Claire Bennett Transition.
It contained my biography, inheritance schedule, home address, and photographs.
The final note read:
Personal relationship may preserve family financing after Eleanor’s control ends.
My marriage had begun as a corporate strategy.
Hale warned me that planned contact did not prove every feeling was false.
I did not care yet.
Real affection does not excuse deliberate financial targeting.
A relationship can contain genuine moments and still be built inside a trap.
Detective Maria Sloan arrived with Brooke’s full phone backup.
The original dinner video included a conversation from earlier that evening.
Grant asked Ryan whether the baby was male.
Ryan answered that the clinic had not released the result.
Diane said, “If it is a son, Claire becomes more useful.”
Brooke asked why.
Grant replied, “The Bennett trust gives expanded succession rights to direct descendants.”
My child had already been assigned financial value.
The trust created a protected reserve for any child I had.
It prevented a spouse from controlling the child’s share.
But if I transferred authority voluntarily, Ryan could influence the reserve as parent.
The family did not only want my current vote.
They wanted access extending into the next generation.
A separate medical report appeared inside the folder beneath Ryan’s chair.
Dr. Stephen Voss described me as paranoid, emotionally volatile, and increasingly unable to manage financial responsibilities.
I had never met him.
The report recommended that Ryan receive temporary authority during the final months of pregnancy.
Dr. Voss served on the Mercer Family Foundation board.
His clinic had received nine hundred thousand dollars in donations during the previous year.
The report was dated four weeks earlier.
My behavior at dinner was meant to validate it.
Grant burned me.
Ryan restrained me.
Diane insulted me.
Brooke recorded my reaction.
Then they planned to show only the moment I destroyed the table.
A frightened woman responding to torture would become an unstable wife destroying family property.
The same family that created the crisis would become its legal protector.
Police searched the penthouse office.
Inside Ryan’s desk, they found a timeline.
Dinner begins at eight.
Pressure discussion at ten.
Signature at eleven thirty.
Medical event if refusal continues.
Secure residence after midnight.
“Secure residence?” I asked.
Hale opened another file.
The Mercers reserved a room under my name at Mountain Crest Behavioral Center.
Admission reason: acute pregnancy related delusion.
Requested stay: forty five days.
Authorized spouse: Ryan Mercer.
Medical representative: Diane Mercer.
Phone access restricted.
Visitor list controlled by family.
If I refused to sign, they intended to remove me from the penthouse and isolate me while Ryan used the false transfer.
The hospital nurse adjusted the monitor.
The baby kicked beneath her hand.
My fear became cold.
“What do I control right now?”
Hale understood the question.
“Your private accounts, Bennett Capital, the penthouse, the Aspen house, the Mercer household trust, and every card issued under it.”
“Cancel the cards permanently.”
“Already done.”
“Remove every Mercer from my properties.”
“The protective order allows that.”
“Freeze any company payment tied to Grant, Diane, Ryan, Brooke, or Wallace personally. Preserve employee payroll and essential operations.”
Hale nodded.
I would not allow them to use workers as shields.
Legitimate salaries continued.
Executive privileges ended.
The Mercer company could survive without funding private cruelty.
Before dawn, building security entered Grant and Diane’s guest suite.
They found suitcases packed.
Cash.
Passports.
And a sealed medical transport order for me.
The pickup time had been twelve fifteen.

A private ambulance had already arrived downstairs while police were inside the penthouse.
Continue to the next part: The ambulance waiting below the building was prepared to take Claire somewhere no one outside the Mercer family could reach her.
