Chapter 4 - Eight Brothers and Eight Stories
The Vance brothers gave eight versions of the same evening.
Marcus said Tessa arrived angry and attacked Harold.
Dean said she slipped while trying to leave.
Paul said he never entered the dining room.
Eric said the family restrained her only after she threatened herself.
Nolan said he remained outside making phone calls.
Travis claimed Nathan was a military mediator sent by me.
Luke admitted holding Tessa but blamed Marcus for the worst violence.
Jason said he remembered nothing because he had been drinking.
The body camera contradicted all of them.
Marcus struck Caleb Morris, the estate guard, after he activated the camera.
Dean stood beside the locked front door.
Paul held Tessa’s right arm.
Eric removed her phone.
Nolan closed the curtains and turned off the internal cameras.
Travis read from the false incapacity statement.
Luke restrained her legs.
Jason moved the broken glass to the staircase after she reached the alarm.
Harold gave instructions.
Nathan remained near the table.
No one had merely watched.
The brothers changed their stories again after Detective Ellis showed them still images.
Paul asked for cooperation consideration.
Nolan blamed Harold.
Jason blamed alcohol.
Travis said he believed the military authorization was genuine.
Detective Ellis asked why a legitimate military representative would direct eight brothers to hold a pregnant woman.
Travis stopped answering.
The hospital conference rooms became separate mirrors.
Each man saw his own choices without the family beside him to normalize them.
Marcus remained defiant.
He told the detective Tessa had always been selfish.
He said Clara favored her because she was the only daughter.
He said the brothers built the family company while Tessa received the land for doing nothing.
The truth was different.
Tessa had worked for Vance Meridian for five years after college.
She created the compliance system that allowed the company to secure federal contracts.
Harold removed her after she questioned payments routed through shell vendors.
The brothers called her disloyal.
Clara changed the trust soon afterward.
The land was not a gift for being the daughter.
It was protection after Tessa discovered something her family wanted hidden.
Margaret Sloan opened Clara’s private estate file.
The shell vendors appeared there.
One company received four million dollars over six years for site security at Falcon Ridge.
The company was called Carter Meridian Consulting.
I had never heard of it.
The registered manager was Nathan Cole.
The original owner was my father, Thomas Carter.
Margaret looked at me.
“Did your father work with Harold?”
“Not that I knew.”
The company formed eight years earlier, while Thomas remained on active duty.
Military ethics rules would have required disclosure.
No such disclosure appeared in his public file.
Payments began after Sentinel Crown first surveyed the land.
My father may have been investigating the deal.
Or profiting from it.
I refused to assume either.
We requested records.
Carter Meridian Consulting’s listed office was a mail facility near Fort Ashford. Bank statements showed most payments moved into a trust after Thomas died.
Trust beneficiary: Nathan Cole.
Harold had been paying Nathan through a company bearing my family name.
That explained their relationship.
It did not explain why Clara allowed the payments to continue.
Her private notes contained one sentence:
Thomas says the ground must remain untouched until the buried report is recovered.
Falcon Ridge held more than development value.
Something beneath the property mattered enough for my father and Tessa’s mother to create parallel protections.
The hospital administrator brought another development.
A man identifying himself as Dr. Peter Sloan arrived to review Tessa’s discharge.
Security detained him before he reached the floor.
Peter carried a medical letter stating that Tessa had experienced prenatal psychosis, attacked family members, and injured herself while resisting care.
The letter was dated the day before the assault.
It described injuries that had not yet happened.
Fractured ribs.
Facial bruising.
Pregnancy complications.
The exact collarbone fracture differed from the final medical result, but the rest of the prediction was close.
Peter had prepared a clinical narrative around planned violence.
Police questioned him.
He said Nathan supplied the information and claimed Tessa had already been injured during an earlier episode.
Hospital records showed no such episode.
Peter’s clinic had reserved a locked room under Tessa’s name.
The intake plan restricted phone access, legal visitors, and military contact for seventy two hours.
During that period, Harold would serve as financial decision maker.
The Falcon Ridge transfer was scheduled for the following morning.
If the plan succeeded, Tessa would awaken inside a private facility after losing her child, land rights, and ability to contact me.
Peter denied knowing about the assault.
His messages showed Nathan asking:
How long after abdominal trauma before incapacity language appears credible?
Peter replied:
Do not send specifics by text.
That response proved enough awareness for investigators to continue.
It did not prove every detail.
Peter requested counsel.
Harold attempted to leave after hearing Peter had arrived.
Civilian officers stopped him under a new warrant connected to forged documents and conspiracy evidence.
The brothers watched from separate rooms as their father was placed in handcuffs.
Marcus shouted that Harold had protected all of them.
Luke began crying.
Jason asked whether cooperation could protect his children.
No one asked how Tessa was breathing.
That evening, the body camera audio team recovered a whispered exchange between Nathan and Harold.
Harold said:
“If James comes home, the uniform makes this harder.”
Nathan answered:
“James will come home only after I decide what story he receives.”
Then Harold asked:
“What about the other witness?”
Nathan looked toward the rear corridor.
A woman answered from outside the camera frame.
“Clara’s daughter will never remember me.”
The ninth man had not acted alone.
