Chapter 8 - Before Baby

Before baby.
Two words.
No verb.
No explicit crime.
Still, they chilled me.
Samantha refused to interpret beyond evidence.
“It could mean obtain the proxy before birth. Transfer shares before birth. Pressure you before birth.”
“Or hurt me.”
“No evidence says that.”
She was right.
The notebook was not a murder plan.
The surrounding documents made the most plausible meaning financial timing.
Why before Samuel?
Lucas’s trust terms changed after the birth of a living child.
Until Samuel was born, I was the sole current beneficiary of income distributions, though future-child provisions existed.
At birth, Samuel became a named beneficiary under trust administration.
Certain amendments or extraordinary corporate actions then required consideration of both my interest and the child’s trust interest.
Not my infant signing papers.
Independent fiduciary protections intensified.
Charles had a narrower window.
If he acquired my twenty percent before Samuel’s birth, he would obtain personal majority control immediately.
Once Samuel was born, the Gallagher trust’s oversight structure became harder to pressure because a minor beneficiary activated additional fiduciary review.
Lucas had built ordinary estate-planning safeguards.
Charles interpreted them as obstacles.
So:
Before baby.
Financial urgency.
Not a plan to harm the baby.
That mattered.
Then Samuel’s official birth notice reached Empire State Trust.
The trustee, Rebecca Holloway, issued a formal beneficiary update.
Charles’s attorney protested that the trust should not vote while estate issues remained.
The trust disagreed.
Lucas’s thirty-two percent existed independently.
Board meeting proceeded.
I joined by secure video from the hospital because I wanted to hear.
Not because I had to.
Marjorie Kline represented employee trust.
Rebecca Holloway represented Gallagher trust.
Charles’s thirty-two percent remained his.
My twenty percent remained mine.
I appointed Samantha as limited meeting proxy for that meeting only.
Clear.
Written.
Revocable.
My first real use of the shares Charles called symbolic.
The board voted to place Charles on administrative leave pending completion of independent audit and criminal review.
Not remove his ownership.
Not confiscate.
Remove operational authority.
The CFO remained.
A new interim executive committee took control.
Charles’s attorney objected.
He lost.
Vote:
My 20.
Gallagher trust 32.
Employee trust 16.
Total supporting leave:
68%.
Charles:
32%.
The same arithmetic he had tried to change by pretending Courtney was me.
Then Northstar lender.
Without a valid Baldwin-Gallagher guarantee, the lender demanded Northstar’s real owners address the debt.
Charles’s personal exposure depended on his authentic guarantees.
Courtney’s exposure depended on CP Development documents she actually signed.
Litigation began.
No one could simply push the debt onto Baldwin-Gallagher because a forged board consent existed.
Then Charles called me from jail? He was on bond maybe. After initial arrest, bond with no contact. He could not call. Good. He communicated through attorney.
A letter:
Victoria is being manipulated by Lucas’s lawyers at a time when she is medically vulnerable.
Samantha showed me.
I laughed.
“What?”
“He is using the exact argument he planned before Samuel was born.”
Yes.
My vulnerability was evidence only when it helped him.
Then my discharge.
Samuel remained two extra days.
I refused to return to my house immediately.
Not because Charles owned it.
Because the porch made me shake.
Samantha arranged temporary apartment near hospital.
Police returned my house after processing.
Locks changed.
Charles’s emergency key irrelevant.
Security code changed.
Court order barred him.
Courtney too.
Then the black fireproof box from Lucas’s desk.
Police had not opened it because it was not part of the assault evidence once they established ownership; Samantha held the key from Lucas’s estate file.
She brought it to me.
“Ready?”
“No.”
“Then later.”
I looked at Samuel.
“Open it.”
Inside:
Original house deed copy.
Insurance policies.
A small encrypted drive.
Lucas’s handwritten journal.
And a sealed envelope.
Victoria.
His handwriting.
My chest collapsed.
I held it but did not open.
Not yet.
Then Samantha lifted the encrypted drive.
“This is what Charles was looking for.”
“What is it?”
“Lucas’s duplicate Northstar evidence.”
The hidden room contained Charles’s version.
The black box contained Lucas’s.
Two archives.
Two stories.
One would have to survive scrutiny.
Then I noticed another envelope beneath mine.
To Samuel, if I’m not there when you arrive.
I stopped breathing.
Lucas had written to our son before he died.
I closed the box.
May you like
I could fight Charles later.
That night, I read Lucas first.
