Chapter 7 - The Person Who Knew My Route

Only five people knew I would be at the warehouse on the morning of my accident.

Harold.

Rachel.

Evelyn.

My supervisor, Mark Benton.

My physical therapist, who had scheduled an appointment nearby.

Michael was already in protective custody.

Nathan had monitored the meeting message but claimed he did not arrange the vehicle.

Samuel said the payment for the driver came from a charitable account controlled by Evelyn.

My mother’s signature authorized it.

She insisted Harold handled every payment through her board access.

The digital record showed her personal device approving the transfer at two fourteen in the morning.

She said she was asleep.

Harold knew her password.

Rachel had access to the house.

Dr. Mercer managed the charity account.

The signature alone did not prove who touched the phone.

Samuel remembered something else.

The payment description read Mobility Support Initiative.

The same phrase appeared in a text Evelyn sent me after the accident.

We will help with every mobility support need.

Was the repetition coincidence?

Daniel examined her messages.

The draft had been created before the collision.

My mother prepared the comforting language the night before I was injured.

She knew something would happen.

During a recorded interview, Evelyn finally admitted Harold told her I might experience an accident that would frighten me away from the company.

“What kind of accident?” I asked.

“He said a forklift would strike your car.”

“I was walking.”

“I did not know that.”

“You knew he planned to terrorize me.”

“I thought he would damage the vehicle.”

“And you did nothing.”

“He said no one would be hurt.”

The sentence had become her shield.

No one would be hurt.

Rachel said it about the birthday.

Evelyn said it about the collision.

Dr. Mercer said it about sedation.

Each person accepted a plan designed to frighten someone physically, then expressed surprise when a body broke.

Samuel disagreed with the financial record.

He believed someone changed the payment after the accident to implicate Evelyn.

The original account entry had been copied into his private ledger.

Payee initials: R.C.

Rachel Carter.

My sister in law controlled a marketing company called Rachel Cole Events before marrying Michael.

The payment moved through that old business.

Rachel hired the construction driver.

Why target me before Michael was legally dead?

Because I had received Samuel’s investigator message.

She feared I would learn Michael survived.

The collision happened four months after the crash, while Rachel still performed public grief.

If I spoke to investigators, the insurance transfer could freeze.

Rachel needed me hospitalized, medicated, and described as unstable.

She had more motive than Harold at that moment.

Daniel confronted her with the ledger.

Rachel changed her story.

She said Nathan ordered the payment.

Nathan used the initials R.C. while working under the name Reed Carter.

No record supported that identity.

The driver in Wisconsin identified Rachel from a photograph.

“She paid me to frighten the woman.”

“Did she tell you to hit Emily?” Daniel asked.

“No. She said destroy the car and make her believe the next one would be worse.”

“Why did you strike her?”

“I lost control.”

Again, the person ordering intimidation claimed the injury was accidental.

Rachel’s plan broke my knee even if she did not specify the angle of impact.

Michael received the information in silence.

Rachel had been his wife for nine years.

She raised Noah with him.

She searched for him publicly after the crash while paying someone to attack his sister.

“Did she know I was alive?” Michael asked.

The driver did not know.

Samuel believed she suspected.

Michael had sent Noah’s birthday envelope before the flight.

Rachel discovered it afterward.

The instructions inside mentioned a future meeting between Michael, Emily, and Samuel.

She realized her husband had prepared for betrayal.

Harold convinced her Michael planned to remove her from Noah’s trust.

He said if Michael survived, he would take the child and leave.

Rachel began helping Harold before she knew whether her husband was dead.

Fear of abandonment became permission to abandon everyone else.

The financial audit found another issue.

Rachel’s ownership claim over Carter Development depended on her legal marriage to Michael.

Their marriage license had been filed nine years earlier.

The witness signature belonged to Harold.

The officiant was Dr. Mercer’s brother.

The county copy had been altered.

Michael’s signature page came from a different document.

He remembered signing a marriage license.

The document may still be valid.

The alteration concerned a prenuptial agreement.

Michael had required that his inherited shares remain separate.

The filed version stated that Rachel received half after five years.

His signature was copied.

Rachel’s claim to company control had been built before the plane crash.

Someone prepared the forged agreement near the beginning of their marriage.

Harold admitted helping.

He said Rachel deserved protection because Michael favored me.

Michael stared at him through the interview screen.

“You forged my marriage agreement because I refused to give you the children’s land.”

Harold smiled for the first time since the birthday.

“You still call it children’s land. You are almost forty.”

“It was ours when you took it.”

“I made it valuable.”

“You made yourself wealthy.”

“I kept the Carter name alive.”

Samuel, listening from his hospital bed, asked Daniel to open the final trust section.

The archive required Nathan Reed’s identity.

Nathan remained missing.

Then a live login appeared.

Nathan had entered the system remotely.

The screen displayed one sentence.

Do not trust Samuel’s rescue.

Samuel’s heart monitor accelerated.

A second message followed.

The man in the hospital is not Samuel Dean.

Continue to the next part: Nathan warns that the rescued trustee may be an impostor placed inside Green Pines to misdirect the investigation.
