The trust eventually became paperwork.
Annual statements.
Tax forms.
Investment meetings.
Distribution requests.
Boring.
Wonderful.
Balance rose.
Then fell.
Then rose again.
After Hawthorne sale and our new home:
About $3.4 million invested.
Not infinite.
Not magic.
I learned diversification.
Fees.
Tax consequences.
Beneficiary rules.
Sophie hated when I explained.
Noah pretended interest until numbers appeared.
Then at sixteen, Noah wanted $20,000 to start an online business.
“No.”
“Why?”
“No business plan.”
He wrote one.
Still weak.

His business failed.
He repaid $1,800.
I forgave the rest as birthday gift after we discussed failure.
Not because Grandma’s money made mistakes free.

Then Sophie wanted Boston college.
Expensive.
We discussed:

She said:
“Grandma left enough.”
“Yes.”
“So why does cost matter?”
“Because having money doesn’t eliminate judgment.”
She groaned.

“Daniel thought money meant he could decide.”
I stopped.
She knew exactly where argument went.
“Fine.”
We laughed.
Then I became operations director.
My salary more than supported ordinary life.
The trust remained safety.
Not status.
No luxury cars.
Not because morality demands modesty.
I simply did not care.
We traveled.
Used good hotels.
Paid tuition.
Fixed teeth.
Replaced roof.
Money became useful.
That was perhaps the healthiest thing Margaret could have wanted.
Then her old emergency reserve sat mostly untouched.
Not because fear.
Because I had built my own emergency fund.
One day I moved part of it into a long-term investment account under trust guidance.
The “escape money” no longer needed to sit waiting for disaster.
