Chapter 1 - The Woman Leo Chose

Adrian Reed believed he understood his son.

Leo liked wooden trains, warm milk before bed, and the blue stuffed elephant that traveled everywhere with him.

He laughed when Adrian lifted him above his head.

He reached for Adrian during photographs.

He occasionally fell asleep against his chest during the rare afternoons when business did not interrupt them.

Adrian believed that was enough.

He did not know a child could love someone and still feel abandoned by them.

The ballroom at Reed Manor glowed beneath crystal chandeliers that evening.

Hundreds of white roses climbed silver stands.

Waiters moved through the room carrying champagne while a string quartet played near the marble staircase.

The gathering was presented as a charity dinner.

Everyone close to Adrian knew the truth.

He was searching for a wife.

Leo’s mother had died shortly after giving birth.

For eighteen months, Adrian had raised his son with the help of nurses, assistants, and household employees.

He believed Leo needed a maternal presence.

He also believed he could select that presence with the same care he used when choosing an investment partner.

Three women had reached the final stage.

Vanessa Sinclair stood near the ballroom windows in a red evening gown.

She was beautiful, intelligent, and experienced in wealthy social circles.

Camille Brooks wore silver and spoke gently whenever Leo was nearby.

Sophia Bennett appeared warmer than the others. She brought children’s books instead of expensive gifts and asked Adrian questions about Leo’s routines.

All three women understood that Adrian was observing them.

None of them knew that he had planned one final test.

Near the center of the ballroom, Adrian placed Leo onto the marble floor.

The child wore navy suspenders, a white shirt, and tiny brown shoes.

Guests formed a loose circle.

Vanessa, Camille, and Sophia knelt several feet away with their arms open.

Vanessa smiled brightly.

Camille held a wooden toy.

Sophia whispered Leo’s name.

Adrian crouched beside his son.

“Go to the person you love most.”

The guests laughed softly.

They expected Leo to choose one of the glamorous women.

Adrian expected the same.

Leo studied them.

Vanessa waved.

Camille shook the toy.

Sophia held out both hands.

The toddler turned away.

At first, Adrian thought he was confused.

Then Leo saw someone near the dessert table.

Emily Carter stood beside the buffet, placing slices of cake onto small plates.

She wore a spotless gray uniform and white apron.

Her chestnut hair was secured in a low bun.

She had worked at Reed Manor for nearly two years.

Adrian knew she was reliable.

He knew she arrived early.

He knew the kitchen manager trusted her.

He had never asked what she meant to his son.

Leo’s face transformed.

“Mama.”

The word crossed the ballroom.

Emily froze.

The silver serving spoon slipped from her hand and struck the floor.

Leo ran toward her with the unsteady speed of a child who had found the only person he trusted to catch him.

Emily dropped to her knees.

He threw both arms around her neck.

“Mama.”

Every guest became silent.

Emily instinctively lifted him.

Leo buried his face against her shoulder and held tightly to her uniform.

She supported his back with one hand and gently touched his hair with the other.

“It is okay, sweetheart.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“I am here.”

Vanessa slowly lowered her arms.

Camille looked toward the floor.

Sophia appeared more saddened than humiliated.

Adrian remained where he was.

His carefully planned test had produced an answer he never considered.

He stood and walked toward Emily.

Leo noticed him but refused to move.

Adrian stopped several feet away.

“Why did he call you that?”

Emily’s face became pale.

“He is still learning words.”

“He knows the difference between names.”

“He sometimes calls people by the wrong word.”

Leo tightened his arms around her.

“Mama stay.”

The innocence of the request silenced every excuse.

Adrian looked at Emily more closely.

She did not appear surprised by Leo’s attachment.

She appeared frightened that Adrian had finally witnessed it.

“How often does he do this?”

Emily lowered her eyes.

Adrian’s voice became quieter.

“How often does my son cry for you instead of me?”

She did not answer.

Leo rested his cheek against her shoulder.

The silence told Adrian more than words could have.

He remembered returning home late and hearing Leo crying upstairs.

A nurse always said the child had settled.

He remembered asking whether Leo had missed him during a week in London.

His assistant said Leo was too young to understand absence.

He remembered countless mornings when Emily quietly left the breakfast room the moment Adrian entered.

He had assumed she was returning to work.

Perhaps she was giving father and son a chance to connect.

A chance Adrian often wasted by checking his phone.

“What have I been missing?” he whispered.

Emily finally looked at him.

“Mr. Reed, this is not the place.”

Adrian glanced around the ballroom.

The guests were watching.

The three women he invited were watching.

His son was clinging to a housekeeper as though letting go meant losing safety.

Adrian turned toward the musicians.

“Stop playing.”

The music ended.

Then he looked at his guests.

“This evening is over.”

Vanessa stepped forward.

“Adrian, everyone came for you.”

“No.”

He looked at Leo.

“They came to watch me choose a woman without asking whether I had ever chosen my own child.”

His voice broke on the final word.

Emily held Leo closer.

Adrian realized the most painful truth of his life.

He had spent eighteen months searching for someone to become a mother.

He had never noticed that his son had already found one.

Continue to the next part: Adrian will ask Emily to reveal what happens inside Reed Manor when he is away, but the nursery records will show that Leo’s loneliness was never accidental.
