The notebook became uglier the more investigators read.
Hayes tracked trainees outside official records.
Not everyone.
The ones he disliked.
Categories:
QUIT.
SOFT.
DESK.
ARGUES.
NEEDS BREAKING.
Next to my name:
JACK’S GIRL.
Underlined twice.
Then dates.
Week one:
Turner knows rifles.
Week two:
Doesn’t scare easy.
Week three:
Push harder.
Week five:
Still here.
Week six:
Final qual problem.
Then:
Equipment.
That word would follow him.
Investigators compared dates to training incidents.
Week three:
I was assigned extra corrective physical training after Hayes claimed I rolled my eyes.
Three trainees said I had not.
Week four:
My locker inspection failed over an item later found in another trainee’s space.
At time I assumed accident.
Could Hayes have moved it?
No evidence.
Do not overclaim.
Week six:
He attempted to recommend me for recycle based on “inconsistent weapons performance.”
My official scores did not support.
Recommendation never submitted because another drill sergeant refused to sign.
That sergeant now gave statement:
“Hayes said Turner needed to learn she couldn’t outshoot her way through infantry.”
Then female trainees.
Price.
Another named Private Dana Holloway.
Hayes told her after a failed movement:
“You’d be useful in a clinic.”
Not itself illegal.
But he then altered her peer evaluation comment to include:
“Lacks aggression required for infantry.”
She had never received that from peers.
Original peer sheets showed positive.
Hayes’s copy changed.
Pattern of record manipulation.
Then Mills.
His two hits removed.
Hayes claimed clerical error.
One error.
Possible.
Five?
Less.
Then current trainee Reed.
Passing score replaced by lower repeat score.
Range policy allowed instructor-directed retraining but both scores should remain visible.
First score disappeared from official file.
Hayes had entered deletion request:
EQUIPMENT ERROR.
No such error documented.
Then the investigation moved beyond “he hates women.”
It became:
Falsifying training records.
Misuse of authority.
Destruction of government property.
Possible assault for shoving/grabbing me? The range incident included grabbing arm and earlier shoulder shove. Could be misconduct under UCMJ even if not severe.
Then old forgery.
Statute limitations questions complicated criminal use.
But administrative records could be corrected.
Jack’s contract history could be amended.
Beck’s injury file reopened for historical findings.
Then Hayes demanded a formal hearing.
Good.
He deserved process.
His defense:
Jack Turner had targeted him eighteen years earlier.
Emma entered training already trained beyond peers and challenged authority.
Beck and Mercer were conspiring to repair their reputations.
Raines confession came after pressure.
The notebook was “private motivational shorthand.”
The rifle swap was intended to test Emma under adversity.
That last argument was astonishing.
Range safety rules did not allow drill sergeants to knowingly issue tagged weapons as psychological tests.
Then his lawyer said:
“He never intended the rifle to malfunction.”
Again.
Intent did not fix authorization.
Then why smash it?
Hayes claimed frustration.
The broken government property charge became simple.
Eighty witnesses.
Video from range tower captured.
Then Emma? Me.
I was ordered not to speak publicly.
Fine.
I trained.
Then one evening I received a letter.
Handwritten.
No return name needed.
Grandpa.
Em,
Do not spend your training carrying my old argument.
I smiled.
Then:
If they clear my record, good.
If they don’t, I still know what I did.
Then:
Your score belongs to you. So does your miss.
I laughed.
Thirty nine.
He had heard.
Then final:
Remember why you joined.
Not to beat Hayes.
Not to vindicate me.
