Chapter 4 - THE RECORDING MADE AFTER THE FUNERAL

The storage device contained encrypted files.

Rebecca’s forensic team copied it before opening anything.

The password hint showed one sentence.

The first place Ethan promised forever.

I entered the name of the small restaurant where Claire and I became engaged.

The files opened.

The first folder contained Hawthorne House medical records.

Claire had been admitted under the name Elena Ward eleven days before her reported funeral.

The admission form described memory loss, paranoid fixation on a businessman named Ethan Carter, and a pregnancy of uncertain paternity.

Noah and Owen’s birth records followed.

Genetic screening during pregnancy identified the father through a sample already held inside a Carter family medical archive.

The probability matched me.

Caroline received the laboratory result.

She signed an internal acknowledgment.

She knew with scientific certainty that the twins were my sons.

The second folder contained financial records.

Hawthorne House received more than twelve million dollars from the Carter Foundation during Claire’s confinement.

Payments were classified as executive wellness research and private security.

Several transfers went to Miles Rourke.

Others went to Dr. Adrian Voss.

The largest payments entered a consulting company controlled by my cousin Marcus Carter.

Marcus was scheduled to receive substantial voting authority after the Continuity Trust restructuring.

Hiding the twins created his corporate future.

The third folder contained videos.

The first showed Claire inside a private room holding newborn Noah and Owen.

She looked pale and exhausted.

Caroline stood beside the bed.

My mother touched Noah’s cheek and said:

“They have Ethan’s eyes.”

Claire asked:

“Then let me call him.”

Caroline answered:

“He does not want them.”

The second video was dated two weeks after the funeral.

Caroline sat across from Claire inside Hawthorne House.

A copy of the memorial program rested on the table.

Claire was crying.

“Why did he bury me?” she asked.

Caroline replied:

“Because Ethan accepted that the woman he loved no longer existed.”

“You told him I died.”

“I protected him from scandal.”

“You stole my sons.”

“They will be raised with every advantage.”

“Without their father?”

“Ethan does not need children changing the trust.”

Claire looked directly toward a hidden camera.

My mother had confessed because she believed the recording system belonged to her.

Anna copied the footage before records were erased.

The fourth folder concerned the crash.

Miles’s security vehicle followed Claire’s car from Chicago.

Another vehicle forced her toward the shoulder near Lake Geneva.

The collision did not kill her.

Voss sedated her at the scene.

A burned body had been placed inside Claire’s vehicle before it was destroyed further.

The identity of that body remained unknown in the files.

Caroline arranged a closed casket through a funeral director who received foundation payments.

The original dental records came from Voss.

My signature appeared on the release form.

It was forged.

The fifth folder contained messages about my letters.

CAROLINE: Remove the box from Ethan’s study.

MILES: Destroy it?

CAROLINE: No. Claire should see what grief does to him if she continues resisting.

My mother had not accidentally allowed Claire to read my letters.

She sent them as psychological pressure.

She wanted Claire to see that I believed her dead.

She wanted her to understand that returning would destroy the life built around her funeral.

Instead, the letters proved I never abandoned her.

Anna and Claire began planning their escape shortly afterward.

The final recording was made the previous night.

Claire sat inside a dark room.

Her hair was shorter than in the food hall photo from the previous story, but this is a new story. Keep consistent: long chestnut hair.

She looked directly into the camera.

“Ethan, if the boys reached you, Anna succeeded.”

She struggled to control her breathing.

“I do not know whether I will reach you too.”

Noah moved closer to the screen.

“Mom.”

Claire continued.

“Your mother will say I am unstable. Parts of my memory are damaged. I have panic episodes. I sometimes lose time after years of medication.”

She looked down.

“Those facts do not make the records false.”

Rebecca paused the video and looked toward me.

Claire understood how trauma would be used against her.

She named uncertainty before anyone else could transform it into total unreliability.

The video resumed.

“The company fraud began before my crash. Marcus and Caroline transferred client assets through foundation partnerships. Your father discovered part of it before he died.”

My father died of a heart attack five years earlier.

No evidence in the files suggested murder.

Claire did not claim otherwise.

She said his internal audit disappeared after Caroline took control of the family office.

The Continuity Trust contained a protection clause.

If Ethan had biological children, certain voting shares moved beyond Caroline’s influence.

Claire’s pregnancy threatened the fraud.

Her disappearance solved several problems.

It removed the investigator.

It concealed the heirs.

It allowed Caroline and Marcus to use my grief to accelerate company restructuring.

Claire’s final words were quieter.

“I wanted to come back for you.”

She looked toward someone outside the frame.

“I do not know whether there is still an us.”

The recording ended.

Noah began crying without making a sound.

Owen pressed against him.

I moved closer and asked:

“May I hold you?”

Both boys hesitated.

Then Noah nodded.

I knelt and wrapped my arms around them carefully.

They felt impossibly small.

Owen placed one hand against my tie.

“Mom said you wear these even when nobody likes them.”

I laughed once through tears.

“That sounds like her.”

For several minutes, I stopped being the chief executive of Carter Capital.

I became a father holding children who had learned my face from hidden photographs.

Rebecca’s phone rang.

One of her agents had found Anna Brooks.

She was unconscious inside a service tunnel two blocks from the office.

She had been struck during the garage confrontation but remained alive.

There was no sign of Claire.

Anna’s hand still held a torn piece of Miles Rourke’s coat.

Police searching the underground network found another item.

Claire’s silver necklace.

Inside the small pendant was a tracking chip that did not belong to her.

Someone had been monitoring her movement since she escaped Hawthorne House.

The signal showed her traveling north inside a vehicle registered to Carter Executive Security.

May you like

Miles had taken her.

Continue to the next part: Ethan uses the company’s own vehicle network to follow Miles, but Caroline orders the tracking system erased before he can reach Claire.
