Chapter 2

The next morning...
Everyone in the Bennett family woke up expecting another peaceful Christmas.
They had no idea their world was about to collapse.
Eleanor sat at the breakfast table drinking coffee.
She looked completely satisfied.
She believed the problem had been solved.
Lily had always been too emotional.
Too sensitive.
Too attached.
That was what she told herself.
"She'll get over it."
Eleanor said.
Her son, Richard, looked uncomfortable.
"Mom, maybe you were too harsh."
Eleanor placed her cup down.
"Harsh?"
"I gave her a lesson."
"A family needs standards."
What Eleanor didn't know...
Was that Maren had already arrived.
Not through the front door.
Through the legal system.
At 9 a.m., a black car stopped outside the house.
Maren stepped out.
Still wearing her doctor's coat.
Still exhausted from her shift.
But her expression was different.
Calm.
Focused.
Determined.
Lily walked beside her.
She had barely spoken all morning.
Maren held her hand.
"You don't have to be afraid."
Lily looked at her.
"What if they hate us?"
Maren gently squeezed her hand.
"Then they can hate me."
"But nobody gets to hurt you."
The front door opened.
Eleanor froze.
"Maren?"
She looked surprised.
"You came all the way here?"
Maren smiled slightly.
"Yes."
"I came home."
Eleanor looked confused.
"This isn't your home anymore."
A silence followed.
Then Maren handed her a folder.
Eleanor opened it.
Her expression changed.
Inside were property documents.
Legal records.
Ownership papers.
Her hands started shaking.
"This..."
Maren looked at her.
"This house."
"The one where you told my daughter she didn't belong."
"Still belongs to me."
Nobody spoke.
Richard looked at his mother.
"You knew?"
Eleanor's face turned pale.
"You let us live here..."
Maren nodded.
"For years."
"Because I wanted my family close."
"I wanted Lily to grow up surrounded by people who loved her."
Her voice became colder.
"But I never imagined I had to protect her from the people inside."
Lily looked at the Christmas table.
The same table where she had been replaced.
Her eyes filled with tears.
Maren noticed.
She walked over.
Removed the dog's Christmas bow.
Then gently placed Lily's gift bag on the empty chair.
"This was always your seat."
Maren whispered.
"It always was."
Eleanor looked away.
For the first time...
She looked ashamed.
But Maren wasn't finished.
She opened another document.
"There's something else."
The room became tense.
"I reviewed the family expenses."
"Over the last five years."
Richard frowned.
"What are you saying?"
Maren looked at Eleanor.
"I'm saying someone has been using my money."
Silence.
The perfect Christmas family image began to fall apart.
Because behind the beautiful house...
The expensive dinners...
The happy photographs...
Was a truth nobody wanted revealed.
Eleanor had not only rejected Lily.
She had been hiding something much bigger.
Something that could destroy the entire family.
Maren placed the documents on the table.
"I came here because my daughter was hurt."
"But now..."
"I want to know what else you've been hiding."
Nobody answered.
Until Richard quietly whispered:
"Mom..."
"What did you do?"
Eleanor looked toward the window.
The snow outside continued falling.
Just like the night before.
May you like
But this time...
She wasn't the person in control.
