Chapter 1

At exactly 3:42 p.m., Barbara Mitchell stood barefoot on the balcony of her Gulf Coast condominium, watching gentle waves roll toward the white sand below.
The afternoon breeze carried the scent of saltwater through the open doors.
For thirty-two years, this condo had been her sanctuary.
She and her late husband, Thomas, had bought it before their son Caleb was born. Every summer had been filled with family barbecues, seashell collections, and sunsets watched from the same balcony.
After Thomas passed away four years earlier, Barbara visited alone several times a year.
It was the one place where grief felt lighter.
Her suitcase still sat open in the living room.
She planned to stay another week.
Then her phone rang.
The screen displayed Harper.
Barbara smiled before answering.
"Hello, Harper."
Harper sounded unusually cheerful.
"Hi, Barbara! I hope you're enjoying the beach."
"I am."
"Good."
There was a brief pause.
"So..."
"My parents are driving down today."
Barbara smiled.
"Oh?"
"They've always wanted to stay in this condo."
Barbara glanced toward the ocean.
"That's nice."
"So Caleb and I thought..."
Another pause.
"...you could stay at a hotel for a few days."
Barbara blinked.
"I'm sorry?"
Harper continued as though the request were perfectly reasonable.
"My parents deserve a vacation."
"The condo has the better view."
"You'll be comfortable at the resort down the road."
Barbara remained silent.
Harper mistook the silence for agreement.
"I already told them they'd have the master bedroom."
Barbara slowly asked,
"When did you discuss this with Caleb?"
"Last night."
"And no one thought to ask me first?"
Another pause.
Then Harper laughed lightly.
"We're family."
"It's basically everyone's vacation home now."
Barbara looked around the condo.
Thomas's framed photograph still rested beside the bookshelf.
The ceramic turtle key holder hung beside the front door.
Every piece of furniture had been chosen together.
It wasn't "everyone's."
It had never been.
Barbara spoke quietly.
"So you expect me to leave my own condominium."
"Just for a few days."
"My parents are only staying two weeks."
Two weeks.
Barbara almost smiled.
Instead she simply said,
"I understand."
Harper sounded relieved.
"Perfect."
"We'll be there in fifteen minutes."
The call ended.
Barbara stood motionless for nearly a minute.
Not angry.
Not even hurt.
Only disappointed.
She had spent years helping Caleb and Harper.
She had watched their children whenever they traveled.
She had helped with a down payment on their first home.
She had never expected repayment.
She simply hadn't expected to be treated like a guest in the home she still owned.
Quietly, Barbara walked inside.
She opened a small fireproof document case stored beneath the kitchen island.
Inside were neatly organized folders.
Insurance papers.
Estate planning documents.
And the original property deed.
Only one name appeared on it.
Barbara Ann Mitchell.
She looked at it for a moment before reaching for her phone.
Attorney David Reynolds answered on the second ring.
"Good afternoon, Barbara."
"I'm ready."
His tone immediately became professional.
"Are you certain?"
"Yes."
"It's time."
He understood exactly what she meant.
"There won't be any misunderstandings after today."
"I know."
Barbara glanced toward the parking lot below.
A silver SUV had just turned into the condominium complex.
Harper had arrived.
"So..."
Barbara said calmly.
"Use the second version."
David paused briefly.
"Very well."
"I'll prepare the revised estate documents immediately."
Barbara thanked him and ended the call.
Outside, Harper stepped confidently from the SUV wearing designer sunglasses.
Caleb climbed out more slowly.
He looked uneasy.
Harper smiled as they walked toward the building.
She already imagined unpacking her parents' luggage.
She assumed Barbara would quietly leave.
She had no idea...
May you like
The conversation she had just started would change far more than a vacation.
It would change the future of the Mitchell family forever.
