Chapter 21 - Ella’s First Year

I babysat Ella once a week after Megan returned to work.
Not because they needed free childcare necessarily.
Because I wanted and they asked.
There were rules.
Sleep.
Food.
Car seat.
No photos online.
I followed.
Easy.
One afternoon Ella cried for forty minutes.
I texted Megan:
She’s miserable. Any ideas?
Megan called.
Walk her near window.
I did.
Worked.
I did not think:
I raised a child, I know better.
That thought came.
I let it pass.
Justin once arrived early and found me letting Ella nap on my chest.
He said:
“We’re trying crib naps.”
I almost snapped.
Then:
“Okay.”
Moved.
Later told Paul:
“He corrected me in my own house.”
Paul said:
“His baby.”
“I know.”
“Still annoyed?”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
Emotions allowed.
Actions chosen.
I smiled.
This was the opposite of Claire’s pattern.
She felt pressure.
Then converted it into authority.
I could feel irritation without taking control.
That was perhaps the deepest healing.
Claire heard about Ella somehow through public birth announcement? No direct contact. She sent congratulations to Justin through attorney.
He did not respond.
No stalking.
No surprise visit.
Good.
At some point, Megan asked whether Claire should ever meet Ella.
Justin said:
“No.”
Not now.
Maybe never.
His choice.
I did not influence.
No memory needed.
The restitution file closed.
All payments complete.
My civil injunction remained as standing no-contact? Could expire or remain. Let's say permanent no agency/no property claims, no-contact criminal condition expired but I kept blocking. Fine.
My house appreciated in value.
I did not care.
Maybe a little.
I added reverse? no.
No one needed it.
One winter, I fell on ice.
Minor.
Bruised hip.
Paul wanted urgent care.
I said no.
He asked:
“Do you want me to argue?”
“Yes.”
He argued once.
I still said no.
Then overnight pain worse.
I chose doctor.
X-ray negative.
That was autonomy.
Not never receiving advice.
Choosing.
I told Helen Marsh at final therapy session:
“I think I’m done.”
“How know?”
“I can be sick without assuming someone will take over.”
She smiled.
“That’s a good marker.”
“Also I’m tired of paying you.”
“Even better.”
We ended.

No dramatic breakthrough.
Just done.
