Chapter 15 - Ethan Meets Daniel Again

Noah was six when Ethan finally agreed.
Five years after kitchen.
Daniel had completed prison.
Two years probation remaining? By then maybe just completed. Let's say probation ended around Noah6.
No violations.
Restitution paid.
No new debt crisis.
No gambling for four years according treatment and financial monitoring.
Ethan said:
“One meeting.”
No Noah.
No company.
Mediator.
Daniel entered first.
Ethan sat opposite.
I was not there.
They told me later.
Daniel:
“I’m sorry.”
Ethan:
“Which part?”
Daniel gave same specific list.
Then Ethan asked:
“Did you love Vanessa?”
Daniel:
“I thought I did.”
“Do you now?”
“No.”
“Did you hate me?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
Daniel:
“I envied you.”
Ethan laughed once.
“Of what?”
“Dad trusted you with operations. Mom listened to you. You had stable life. I was losing money and pretending I wasn’t.”
“You owned same company stake.”
“I wanted cash.”
“So you slept with my wife.”
“There isn’t logical bridge.”
Good answer.
Then Noah.
“Did you think he could get burned?”
Daniel:
“Yes.”
Ethan later told me that answer nearly ended meeting.
“You knew?”
“I told myself Vanessa wouldn’t let him touch anything.”
“He was seven months old.”
“I know.”
“You called him useful.”
“Yes.”
Ethan stood.
Daniel did not stop.
Then Ethan sat again.
“Why did you call police anonymously?”
“To create official record against Mom.”
“What if police arrested her?”
“That was goal.”
“What if Noah got removed?”
“I told myself he would stay with you and Vanessa.”
“You were trying to isolate me with woman sleeping with you.”
“Yes.”
Silence.
Then:
“Do you expect me forgive?”
“No.”
Good.
Ethan left.
No handshake.
A year later, they had coffee.
No mediator.
Slow.
At Noah eight, Ethan asked:
“Would you want meet Uncle Daniel?”
Noah knew simplified truth:
Uncle Daniel helped Vanessa scare him when he was baby and lied about Grandma.
He said:
“No.”
Done.
At nine:
Maybe.
Meeting at park.
Daniel did not hug.
No gifts.
“Hi, Noah.”
“Hi.”
Noah stared.
“You went prison.”
“Yes.”
“Because of me?”
“No. Because of choices I made involving you and company.”
“Did you put me by soup?”
“No. Vanessa did. I helped plan situation and knew she would scare you.”
“Why?”
“Because I wanted Grandma to react.”
“That's stupid.”
“Yes.”
Kids are efficient.
Then Noah:
“Do you still steal?”
“No.”
“How know?”
“You don’t have to know. You can watch what I do.”
Excellent.
Noah played.
Daniel stayed twenty minutes.
No relationship forced.
Later they saw each other at larger holidays.
No babysitting.
No financial role.
Uncle, at distance.
Then Vanessa.
At Noah ten, she sent request through attorney:
One letter to Noah if Ethan agreed.
Ethan asked therapist and Noah.
Noah:
“Who is she?”
That hurt Ethan.
He showed photo.
Noah remembered nothing.
“We don’t have to.”
“What did she do?”
Age appropriate facts.
“She tried to scare you near hot soup as part of plan to make Grandma look dangerous.”
“Did she put me in?”
“No.”
“Did I get hurt?”
“No.”
“Did Grandma?”
“She got hit.”
“Vanessa?”
“Grandma threw soup and Vanessa was burned.”
No hero cleanup.
“Dad?”
“I pushed Vanessa out while she was still trying to get you.”
Then:
“Do I have to read?”
“No.”
He said no.
Vanessa accepted.
At twelve:
He asked for letter.
It said:
Noah, I was your stepmother for about five months after your mother Laura died. I fed you, changed you, and sometimes loved caring for you. I also resented you and used your fear in a plan against your grandmother. Both are true. You did nothing wrong. I am not asking to meet you.
Noah read twice.
“Why say sometimes loved?”
Ethan:
“Because people can care and still do harmful things.”
“Do you forgive her?”
Ethan:
“I don’t know.”
“Grandma?”
I answered:
“Enough to stop carrying anger. Not enough to want relationship.”
Noah nodded.
Then he put letter away.

No forced answer.
Continue to the next chapter: Noah met Daniel only after choosing to and later read Vanessa’s apology on his own terms, learning that the adults who endangered him could admit wrongdoing without gaining automatic access to his life.
