Chapter 14 - Rachel Pleads
Rachel pleaded guilty before trial.
Not to everything charged.
Negotiations narrowed.
She accepted responsibility for:
Identity fraud.
Attempted financial exploitation.
Forgery/conspiracy involving power of attorney.
Coercive participation in the money demand.
Her cooperation against Marcus was credited.
The state dismissed or merged some lesser counts.
No magic immunity.
No walking away.
At plea hearing, judge asked:
“Did you knowingly create a document falsely purporting to grant financial authority over your mother’s assets?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know your mother had not authorized you or Marcus to control those assets?”
“Yes.”
“Did you participate in pressuring her to provide passwords and signatures?”
“Yes.”
“After she was physically injured?”
Rachel began crying.
“Yes.”
That mattered.
The judge continued.
“Were you forced by Marcus?”
“No.”
I was not in courtroom.
I watched from private remote link with Nora.
That answer broke me.
Not because surprising.
Because clean.
No excuse.
Then sentencing was delayed until Marcus trial because her cooperation might affect recommendation.
Rachel wrote me a letter.
Nora asked if I wanted.
I read.
Mom,
I keep trying to find a version where Marcus made me do it.
There isn’t one.
He pushed.
I agreed.
I was scared of debt.
I chose you as solution.
I have no right to ask you to forgive me.
For once, no inheritance question.
No bargain.
I put letter in drawer.
