Chapter 1 - THE VIDEO BENEATH THE POOL

Michael hit the wet concrete before the false statement left his hand.
I had struck him once.
Hard enough to knock him down.
Not hard enough to make the rage inside me feel smaller.
My brother stared up at me in disbelief while water from the pool ran beneath his plaid shirt.
Around us, the family party dissolved into shouting.
My mother screamed my name.
Sarah rushed toward her husband.
Tyler remained beside the open equipment hatch, watching everything with a small expression that looked almost amused.
Emily sat several feet away, holding her right hand against her chest.
Her fingers were swelling.
Two bent at angles I could not allow myself to study for too long.
Lisa knelt beside her.
“Keep your arm still, sweetheart. The ambulance is coming.”
Emily’s face had gone pale.
“Dad, I did not do anything.”
I turned away from Michael and crouched beside my daughter.
“I know.”
“He told me to reach inside.”
“Who?”
“Tyler.”
Tyler shrugged.
“She got in my way.”
Something inside me moved toward him.
I stopped it.
He was fifteen.
Old enough to understand cruelty.
Still young enough that every adult around him had helped build the person standing near that hatch.
Michael pushed himself upright.
“You just assaulted me in front of witnesses.”
“You tried to make me sign a lie while my daughter’s hand was broken.”
“I was protecting a child.”
“Which child?”
His eyes moved toward Tyler.
That was the answer.
The incident statement remained on the concrete.
It had already been completed.
Emily Carter became agitated and attempted to strike Tyler Hayes near the pool equipment compartment. Tyler closed the hatch defensively, causing accidental injury.
Only my signature was missing.
Michael had prepared the story before anyone examined Emily’s hand.
Sarah stood beside Tyler with one arm around his shoulders.
“He has college recruiters watching him,” she said. “A police report could end everything.”
Lisa looked up from Emily.
“Your son crushed her fingers.”
“It was an accident.”
Mason spoke from behind a patio chair.
“No, it was not.”
Everyone looked at him.
Michael’s younger son was nine years old. He stood barefoot in swim shorts, holding Tyler’s phone with both hands.
His fingers shook.
“Tyler told her there was a bracelet inside the hatch.”
Tyler’s expression changed.
“Mason, give me my phone.”
Mason stepped backward.
“He told her Grandma dropped it in there.”
My mother, Elaine, lowered the stack of paper plates she had been holding.
“I did not lose a bracelet.”
Tyler moved toward Mason.
I stood between them.
“Stay where you are.”
He stopped.
Not because he respected me.
Because the ambulance siren was growing louder and neighbors had begun appearing beyond the fence.
Mason held the phone toward me.
“Uncle Daniel, he recorded everything.”
Tyler lunged.
Lisa moved Emily behind her while I caught Tyler by the shoulder and redirected him away from Mason.
He pulled free.
“Do not touch me.”
“Then do not approach him.”
Michael climbed to his feet.
“That phone is private property.”
“It contains evidence of an assault.”
“You do not know what it contains.”
Mason looked at his father.
“Yes, he does.”
The phone was unlocked.
A video remained open on the screen.
The image showed Emily kneeling beside the pool equipment hatch moments before her injury.
Tyler stood behind her, holding the camera.
His voice came through the speaker.
“Reach farther.”
Emily answered:
“I do not see Grandma’s bracelet.”
“It fell behind the filter.”
“I cannot reach it.”
“Use your right hand.”
She stretched inside.
Tyler placed his free hand on the heavy lid.
Mason’s voice sounded from somewhere outside the frame.
“Do not do it.”
Tyler looked toward him.
Then he slammed the hatch.
Emily’s scream tore through the phone.
The video shook as Tyler laughed.
He held the lid down while she tried to pull her hand free.
“Say you should have listened to me.”
“Please!”
“Say it.”
“Tyler, stop!”
Her fingers disappeared beneath the metal edge.
The recording ended when Mason grabbed the phone.
Nobody beside the pool spoke.
Michael’s face had become gray.
Sarah loosened her grip around Tyler.
My father, George, walked from the grill carrying a towel.
He did not look shocked.
He looked angry that the video existed.
“Turn that off,” he said.
I stared at him.
“You knew.”
“I knew Tyler had behavioral issues.”
“You knew he recorded himself hurting Emily.”
“No.”
Mason began crying.
“Grandpa told Dad to delete the other ones.”
George’s head turned sharply.
“You do not understand adult conversations.”
“I heard you.”
Michael stepped toward his younger son.
“Mason, enough.”
The ambulance entered the driveway.
Paramedics hurried through the gate and examined Emily.
One asked how the injury happened.
Before I could answer, Michael spoke.
“The children were roughhousing.”
Mason held up the phone.
“No, they were not.”
The paramedic looked at the video.
Then at Tyler.
A second emergency worker quietly called police.
Emily was placed on a stretcher.
As they stabilized her hand, Mason touched my arm.
“There are more videos.”
“How many?”
“I do not know.”
He swiped across the screen.
The gallery contained a hidden album labeled PLAYS.
There were forty seven files.
Most showed Tyler wearing football clothing.
Some were filmed at school.
Others inside my parents’ house.
Several thumbnails showed Emily.
One displayed her crying in a dark pantry.
Another showed Tyler holding Mason’s face beneath pool water.
The oldest video was dated twenty two months earlier.
Emily sat tied to a dining chair during a family Christmas party.
Her mouth had been covered with silver tape.
Michael stood behind her.
My father’s voice came from off camera.

“Keep Daniel out of this until she admits what she saw.”
Continue to the next part: Emily awakens after surgery and reveals why the family tied her to a chair almost two years earlier.
