Chapter 10 - THE DAUGHTER THEY PLANNED TO BLAME

Suddenly Julian’s accusation at the funeral sounded different.
“She’s stealing my inheritance.”
At first, I thought it was rage.
Now I wondered whether somebody had spent months teaching him to believe it.
Fake emails to Raymond.
My account on Dad’s computer.
A forged option document.
If the financial schemes collapsed, there was already a trail pointing toward me.
Executor.
Caregiver.
Daughter with daily access.
Perfect suspect.
Samuel looked at Julian.
“Who told you Elena was manipulating Arthur’s accounts?”
Julian hesitated.
“Christopher.”
“Only Christopher?”
“No.”
“Who else?”
“My mother in law.”
Serena turned.
“My mother?”
Her mother, Diane Lowell, was a CPA.
She occasionally helped Serena’s design business.
Diane had reviewed Blue Meridian tax records.
She noticed payments connected to Dad.
She warned Julian:
“Elena is moving Arthur’s money around.”
Why?
Because the bank statements Diane saw labeled certain transfers:
ELENA AUTHORIZED INTERNAL SWEEP.
I had authorized no sweeps.
Where did statements come from?
Julian downloaded them from Dad’s banking profile after he gained access.
The descriptions had been entered through transfer memos.
Someone intentionally typed my name.
Dad noticed.
That was part of his trap.
Then Samuel opened another hidden folder on flash drive.
ELENA.
I hated seeing my name.
Inside:
A list Dad created.
False emails.
Fake login.
Transfer memos.
Forged digital signature on Parcel C notice.
Dad’s note:
Elena does not know any of this exists.
I am preserving it because once I am dead, the easiest story will be that she controlled me.
My eyes burned.
He knew.
He knew exactly what my brother would say.
Then:
If Julian believes the story, he may not be the one creating it.
That stopped me.
Dad distinguished belief from authorship.
Who built the evidence against me?
Christopher had motive.
Serena had access.
Julian had access.
Raymond had resentment.
But the fake Elena account reset used Northstar’s office phone.
Who worked there?
Northstar executive director:
Karen Mills.
Bookkeeper:
Thomas Reed.
Volunteer coordinator.
Julian.
Serena sometimes.
Christopher had consulting access.
Bank investigator pulled phone logs.
The reset call originated after office hours.
Badge entry:
Thomas Reed.
The bookkeeper.
He had worked at Northstar for four years.
Julian stared.
“Tom?”
Thomas had no known relationship to Mercer family.
Background clean.
Former accountant.
Why would he help?
Investigators contacted him.
He did not run.
He arrived with an attorney voluntarily.
His first sentence:
“I was waiting for Arthur to die.”
Every person went cold.
Why?
Because Dad had hired him.
Not Northstar.
Dad.
Six months earlier, Arthur discovered Northstar irregularities.
Instead of confronting everyone immediately, he hired Thomas through Samuel as an independent forensic accountant.
Thomas applied for an open bookkeeping position at Northstar?
Wait he worked there four years. Can't. Let's adjust: Thomas was already Northstar bookkeeper and became whistleblower to Arthur. Yes.
Thomas discovered misuse.
He contacted Arthur anonymously.
Dad hired him confidentially to preserve records.
Then why reset Elena’s account?
Thomas said he did not.
His badge was used.
His card had been missing two days.
He reported to Julian’s office.
No formal incident report.
Who found it?
Christopher.
He claimed it was under desk.
Another path.
Thomas provided something more valuable.
A copy of Northstar’s internal access logs.
Christopher used a guest workstation after hours on the same night as Elena account reset.
Guest login issued by:
Serena.
She had given him access for property documents.
Again.
Christopher had the opportunity.
But Thomas warned:
“Christopher did not know Elena’s old password.”
Who did?
Julian.
Maybe Dad.
Samuel.
Me if I remembered.
Then the reset did not require old password, only identity verification.
Christopher had files.
Possible.
Thomas also preserved voice recordings? Northstar office calls recorded for donor compliance. One call.
Christopher to unknown woman.
“We have Elena’s profile ready.”
Woman:
“Does Julian believe it?”
Christopher:
“He wants to.”
That line chilled me.
Female voice.
Not Serena.
Not Diane?
We played for Serena.
She went pale.
“I know her.”
“Who?”
“Karen Mills.”
Northstar’s executive director.
Julian stared.
“No.”
Karen ran charity daily operations.
Respected.
Former military spouse.
She had been with Northstar since founding.
If she participated, the fraud went deeper.
Why?
Thomas’s forensic analysis showed Karen approved vendor payments.
She had seen missing money.
Instead of reporting, she helped classify.
Then her compensation.
Northstar paid her one hundred twenty thousand salary.
Blue Meridian paid her another seventy thousand consulting fee.
Lane Coastal paid fifty thousand.
Three directions.
She was financially tied to everyone.
When contacted, Karen did not answer.
Her office empty.
Phone off.
Then Thomas gave Samuel one final file.
Three days before Dad died, Karen sent Christopher:
Arthur has Elena key plan. Funeral is safest window.
Funeral.
The punch.
The safe.
Somebody had anticipated exactly when the key would become accessible.
Julian stared at the message.
“I never saw that.”
Serena whispered:
“Neither did I.”
Karen and Christopher were planning around Dad’s funeral separately from them.
May you like
The family greed had become cover for a more organized attempt to reach the safe.
Continue to the next part: Northstar’s executive director and Christopher were planning to use Arthur’s funeral as the moment to reach the safe, even without Julian knowing their full plan.
