Chapter 17 - THE SISTER WHO BECAME MY LAWYER

DNA testing confirmed it within twenty four hours.

Rebecca and I were identical twins.

The photograph from Nathan’s office had shown Samira wearing Rebecca’s uniform, but Rebecca’s fingerprints had opened the door because identical faces had distracted investigators from the simpler truth.

Rebecca herself had been connected to me from birth.

Fingerprints remained different.

The copied sleeve solved that problem.

Our voices had never sounded identical because military surgery after a throat injury altered Rebecca’s.

Our faces had diverged through age, injuries, and procedures.

She had spent years standing beside me without allowing the resemblance to become obvious.

Margaret Shaw explained the beginning.

Our biological mother worked as an intelligence translator in Germany. When she discovered military patient identities were being transferred through a secret legal program, she prepared to testify.

She died during a suspicious fire.

Cole’s predecessors separated her twins.

One child entered an ordinary military foster placement in Virginia.

The other entered Continuity.

Rebecca grew up inside training facilities, legal offices, and controlled homes. She learned that names were assignments and family relationships were security risks.

At twenty six, she found my service record.

Instead of contacting me as a sister, she entered my career as a JAG officer.

She approved my clearances.

Protected me during investigations.

Helped me create Lily’s trust.

Every helpful act also placed her closer to my identity.

“Did she ever care about me?” I asked Margaret.

The old nurse looked toward the window.

“Children can love the person they were trained to replace.”

That was not an answer.

Perhaps no clean answer existed.

Nathan discovered the twin record while investigating Samira. He confronted Rebecca.

She claimed she remained inside Continuity to dismantle it.

Nathan believed her because I trusted her.

Then he found the succession clause giving her Lily’s trust.

He realized Rebecca did not want to destroy the system.

She wanted to control it.

Samira had recorded part of their final meeting.

Her device captured Nathan’s office through the uniform pocket.

Rebecca entered after Samira.

Nathan placed the identity ledger on his desk.

“You told me Echo Ward was the final substitute.”

“She is the final active field operator.”

“What about Nadiya?”

“A protected child.”

“You built her records around my daughter.”

“I built an exit if Hannah became compromised.”

“You mean if Hannah refused you.”

Rebecca’s voice remained calm.

“My sister has always confused disobedience with morality.”

“She rescued families your commanders ordered her to abandon.”

“And exposed operations that protected thousands.”

“You sound like Cole.”

“I taught Cole the legal language.”

Nathan became silent.

Rebecca had not worked beneath General Cole.

Cole had worked inside the system she maintained.

Nathan asked about the N C Seven order.

Rebecca admitted placing it beneath my authorization package.

“You made Hannah sign her husband’s containment order.”

“I needed legal insulation.”

“What happens tomorrow?”

“Marcus damages the brakes. Cole increases the failure. Warren hides the vehicle.”

“And you?”

“I recover the ledger after you understand the warning.”

Nathan looked directly toward Samira’s hidden camera.

“If I die, Hannah will find you.”

Rebecca answered softly.

“That is what I am counting on.”

The recording ended.

She wanted my investigation to expose Warren, Marcus, Voss, and Cole.

They were becoming liabilities.

Nathan’s death would push me toward them.

Rebecca expected me to remove every rival while she inherited control of the trust and Continuity records.

My grief had been part of her succession plan.

Rachel sat beside me after hearing the recording.

“I thought Marcus was the worst person inside this family.”

“He was violent.”

“But Rebecca made him useful.”

“Yes.”

“Does that make him less responsible?”

“No.”

She nodded.

Responsibility could be divided without becoming smaller.

Rebecca’s current location appeared when she used the original ledger to activate a Continuity safe account.

The transaction came from the abandoned airfield.

She had returned after agents cleared it.

This time, no aircraft waited.

Only a hangar containing the black identity server.

Rebecca stood beside it with a fuel line running across the floor.

She contacted me directly.

“Come alone or every surviving family loses the records proving who they are.”

“You know I will not come alone.”

“I know you will bring agents. I also know they cannot enter before I erase the server.”

“What do you want?”

“The trust seal.”

“It does not belong to you.”

“It belongs to the system that created both of us.”

“No. Nathan built it for Lily.”

“Nathan built a legal weapon using our mother’s stolen research.”

She knew something the files had not shown.

Our biological mother had designed the first identity protection method. Continuity corrupted it after her death.

The trust seal contained the original encryption pattern.

With it, Rebecca could control the entire identity network.

Without it, she could destroy every record.

Lily entered the room behind me.

Rebecca heard her voice.

“Aunt Rebecca?”

Rebecca became silent.

Lily continued.

“You keep saying you protected Mom. Did she ever ask you to?”

The question reached a place evidence had not.

Rebecca ended the call.

The server signal began moving.

It was not inside the hangar.

Rebecca had placed it inside a transport vehicle heading toward the international border.

The hangar was another stage.

This time, she was traveling with the ledger herself.

Continue to the next part: Hannah, Samira, and Lily must stop Rebecca from carrying thousands of stolen identities across the border without turning the pursuit into the violent rescue Rebecca expects.
