Chapter 13 - Vanessa Tries to Become a Victim
Vanessa’s attorney requested separate proffer.
She was ready to blame Daniel.
“I was afraid of him.”
Was she?
Investigators took seriously.
No automatic disbelief.
They reviewed.
Did Daniel hit Vanessa?
No evidence.
Threaten?
Some arguments.
Financial control?
They shared accounts.
Vanessa had her own credit cards.
She moved money independently.
Then texts.
She often escalated Daniel.
DANIEL:
Maybe we stop. Mom’s getting hurt.
VANESSA:
And then what? Lose everything because she’s stubborn?
Another:
DANIEL:
Claire may come for birthday.
VANESSA:
Then keep Margaret upstairs until bruises fade.
Another:
DANIEL:
No more straps.
VANESSA:
Fine. You hold her.
That destroyed a coercive spouse defense.
Could Vanessa still have feared Daniel emotionally?
Maybe.
But she was an active architect.
Then the physical assaults.
Mom described Vanessa slapping her four times on different occasions.
Once with an open hand.
Once with a folded towel containing something hard? She wasn't sure.
Once pushing her against a dresser.
Once striking her shoulder.
Daniel did more restraint.
Vanessa more hitting.
Both threatened.
Then Vanessa’s most chilling act.
She wrote a script for Margaret.
Police found in printer history:
If Claire asks:
I am happy.
Daniel helps me.
Vanessa takes care of me.
I chose to sell the cabin.
I gave Daniel money because he deserves it.
I am forgetful and sometimes accuse people unfairly.
Mom recognized.
“They made me practice that.”
When?
Before Thanksgiving video call.
I remembered.
Mom on screen.
Vanessa sitting just off camera.
Mom said:
“Daniel takes good care of me.”
I smiled.
Said:
“I’m glad.”
Then Mom stumbled:
“I chose to sell…”
Vanessa interrupted:
“She means the cabin.”
I thought it was confusion.
It was rehearsal.
Then my guilt hit again.
Dr. Ross said:
“Guilt is not evidence that you caused this.”
I knew.
Still.
I had missed.
Mom told me:
“They were good at it.”
Then:
“And I was ashamed.”
Why?
“Because I raised Daniel.”
There it was.
Abused parent blaming herself for adult child.
I answered:
“You raised me too.”
She smiled weakly.
“Fair.”
Then Vanessa’s proffer.
She eventually admitted key facts:
The house deed was forged.
Daniel created signature image.
She found Caroline’s seal scan.
They both submitted.
Lake cabin transfer used POA they knew restricted self dealing.
They planned ratification.
They forced signatures.
She had administered extra sedating medication.
She had struck Margaret.
Why confess?
Evidence.
And she wanted reduced sentence.
Cooperation is not redemption.
But truth helps.
Then Daniel learned she was cooperating.
Through discovery later.
He called her from detention.
Recorded jail call.
“You’re throwing me under the bus.”
Vanessa:
“You tied her.”
Daniel:
“You hit her.”
Vanessa:
“You made the deed.”
Daniel:
“You scanned the seal.”
Silence.
Investigators must have loved that call.
Then Vanessa said:
“We both did it.”

Simple.
No mastermind escape.
