Chapter 4

Marcus reached Dr. Michael Carter before anyone else could speak.
"Tell me."
His voice was barely audible.
Michael removed his surgical cap slowly, exhaustion visible in every line on his face. Hours of delicate surgery had taken their toll.
"We stopped the bleeding."
Marcus closed his eyes.
"The placenta was partially detached, but we were able to stabilize it."
"Our biggest concern now is preventing premature labor."
"And Khloe?"
"She's awake."
"She's weak."
"But she's asking for you."
Marcus didn't wait for permission.
He hurried into the recovery suite where Khloe lay beneath warm blankets, pale from blood loss. An IV line ran into her arm, and fetal monitors continued tracking the baby.
The steady rhythm of two heartbeats filled the quiet room.
Khloe smiled faintly when she saw him.
"You stayed."
Marcus laughed through tears.
"There isn't anywhere else I'd ever be."
He gently kissed her forehead.
"I'm so sorry."

Khloe frowned.
"You didn't do this."
"I brought her here."
"I ignored every warning."
"I thought she was just bitter."
His voice cracked.
"I almost lost both of you because I believed people could change simply because they smiled."
Khloe reached for his hand.
"Listen to me."
He looked up.
"You are responsible for loving me."
"You are not responsible for another person's cruelty."
For the first time since the attack, Marcus allowed himself to cry.
He rested his forehead against her hand.
"I thought I was going to lose you."
"So did I."
She whispered.
"But our little girl kept fighting."
"Our daughter."
Marcus smiled.
"You still think she's a girl?"
Khloe nodded.
"She already has your stubbornness."
They both laughed quietly.
It was the first peaceful moment they had shared all night.
A gentle knock interrupted them.
Dr. Carter entered with Detective Sarah Mitchell.
"I'm sorry to disturb you," the detective said softly, "but I wanted you to hear this directly from me."
Khloe nodded.
"Go ahead."
"Isabella Rossi has officially been charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery against a pregnant victim, and several related felony offenses."
Khloe remained silent.
The detective continued.
"After reviewing the surveillance footage and recovered text messages, the prosecutor determined the attack was planned."
Marcus squeezed Khloe's hand tighter.
"There was more."
The detective placed a folder on the bedside table.
"We also interviewed Ms. Rossi's assistant."
The assistant had confessed that Isabella had asked about hospital security weeks earlier.
She wanted to know whether private maternity suites had cameras.
She had specifically chosen the fundraiser because she knew Marcus would be downstairs greeting donors.
She knew Khloe would likely be alone.
Every detail had been calculated.
Khloe felt a chill despite the warm blankets.
"I kept asking myself why."
The detective answered quietly.
"Because obsession doesn't need a reasonable motive."
"It only needs an opportunity."
Before leaving, Detective Mitchell paused.
"Mrs. Thorne..."
"You didn't just survive."
"You stopped someone who might have done this again."
After she left, silence settled over the room again.
Marcus looked at the city lights outside the window.
"I've already instructed my attorneys to begin civil proceedings."
Khloe looked at him.
"You don't have to."
"I do."
He answered calmly.
"This isn't about revenge."
"It's about making sure she never has another chance to destroy someone else's family."
The following morning, news of the arrest spread across Chicago.
Television stations reported that a wealthy socialite had been arrested inside one of the city's most prestigious hospitals after security footage contradicted her statements.
Because the criminal case was ongoing, Khloe's identity remained protected.
Marcus wanted it that way.
He refused every interview.
Every request for comment.
His only concern was the woman sleeping in the hospital bed.
Three days later, Dr. Carter returned carrying the latest ultrasound images.
"I have something much happier to show you."
He turned the monitor toward them.
There, moving gently inside Khloe's womb, was their daughter.
Her tiny fingers opened and closed.
Her heart beat strongly.
Perfectly.
"No signs of distress," Dr. Carter said with a smile.
"If everything continues like this, I expect she'll stay exactly where she belongs for several more weeks."
Khloe cried again.
This time, they were tears of relief.
Marcus wrapped one arm around her shoulders while resting his other hand over her stomach.
"Hi, sweetheart."
He whispered to his unborn daughter.
"Daddy's here."
"And nobody is ever going to hurt you again."
Outside the room, Dr. Carter quietly watched through the glass before walking away.
He had spent decades saving lives.
Moments like this reminded him why he had never retired.

Inside the room, two parents listened to the strongest sound they had ever heard.
The steady heartbeat of the little girl who had refused to give up.
