Chapter 5 - The Person With the Master Password

The chapel recordings disappeared one file at a time.

First the main altar camera.

Then the aisle.

Then the private office where Vanessa froze the transfer.

The attacker used the venue’s master maintenance password.

Only three people had received it.

The chapel manager.

The security contractor.

Elena Ruiz.

I looked at my attorney.

She did not flinch.

“I never logged into the system.”

Agent Brooks took her phone and laptop for examination.

Elena surrendered both without argument.

The access request came from a device inside the hospital.

Someone near Patrick’s room had connected to the chapel network through the police evidence portal.

The hallway camera showed doctors, nurses, officers, Elena, me, and Patrick’s medical technician.

The technician had entered under the name Samuel Reed.

No employee record existed for him.

He had already left.

Police found his discarded uniform inside a stairwell. Beneath it was a dark suit and a wedding guest badge.

Samuel Reed had been inside the chapel.

The guest list identified him as a housing consultant invited by Thomas Cole.

The photograph on the badge was false.

Patrick recognized the face from the East Harbor warehouse.

“He controlled the timer.”

Gregory had arranged the kidnapping, but Samuel had guarded him.

The man was not merely an employee.

He held the master passwords for Adrian’s hidden companies, the chapel system, and the evidence portal.

Adrian had referred to someone in the wedding recording.

He helped me hide everything.

We assumed he meant Judge Cole because Thomas stood and tried to leave.

The audio never completed the name.

The final word had been cut off by the chapel chaos.

Thomas may have fled because he feared being exposed.

That did not prove Adrian had named him.

Agent Brooks restored a low quality backup from the manager’s private recorder. The second audio continued for another two seconds.

Adrian said, “He helped me hide everything after Thomas lost control.”

The unnamed man was above the judge.

Vanessa sat beside me inside the hospital conference room.

“My father answers to someone?”

“Everyone answers to someone when enough money is involved,” Brooks said.

The federal housing fraud began thirteen years earlier, before Adrian’s largest developments and before my marriage.

Caroline Cole discovered inflated construction invoices while serving on a state housing advisory board. She collected evidence and planned to contact federal investigators.

Thomas signed documents declaring her medically incapable of managing the trust.

Adrian helped move her into a private treatment facility owned by one of his earliest investors.

Three months later, Caroline was declared dead.

The investor’s name did not appear in public records.

Only initials were listed in the original Vale Urban Renewal ledger.

S.R.

Samuel Reed.

The same false name used by the medical technician.

Perhaps it was not false.

Patrick remembered another detail.

Samuel wore a silver ring engraved with a lighthouse. The same symbol appeared on several Beacon Residential invoices.

Agent Brooks traced the symbol to Reed Maritime Foundation, a philanthropic organization funding coastal housing and political campaigns.

Its founder was Senator William Reed.

He had attended the wedding.

He sat in the second row, delivered a toast at the reception rehearsal, and left the chapel before the doors locked.

The guest who stood during the recording had been Thomas Cole.

The person Adrian named may already have escaped.

Senator Reed controlled federal committees overseeing housing grants. He had praised Adrian’s redevelopment projects publicly and recommended Thomas for the judicial appointment.

He also employed Vanessa’s mother before her disappearance.

Brooks requested immediate warrants.

The senator’s office responded that he was traveling abroad on government business.

Flight records showed his private jet left Boston twenty minutes after the chapel confrontation began.

Elena’s devices were cleared after forensic analysis proved the hospital access had cloned her credentials from the evidence portal.

The attacker chose her identity deliberately.

If the recordings vanished completely, suspicion would fall on my attorney.

Every safeguard had a prepared scapegoat.

I thought about the five million dollars transferred under my name.

Adrian had been building the same escape route for years.

The federal team managed to recover most chapel recordings from an offsite archive. The video of Adrian lunging toward me remained intact. So did his recorded threat.

Public release was delayed while the investigation continued.

Adrian’s attorneys used the delay to claim no authentic evidence existed.

News programs began describing the wedding as a revenge spectacle staged by an unstable ex wife.

Photographs of me exposing my bruises appeared beside old divorce filings that called me emotionally volatile.

Adrian’s story was moving faster than the evidence.

Then my former accounting firm contacted Agent Brooks.

Someone had entered its archive under my old credentials and removed the original financial model I created.

The building camera showed a woman in a white coat.

Vanessa recognized her.

“Dr. Evelyn Reed.”

Senator Reed’s wife.
