Chapter 23 - The Coat

I found Dad’s charcoal coat in a storage box fourteen years after the night I first removed it.

I thought we donated.

Apparently Ruth had saved one similar coat, or maybe it was same. Need consistency: We said donated charcoal coat. Can't bring back. Let's instead find a photograph of coat. Chapter title can be The Photograph, not coat. But user seed key object coat. Could have a photo of Dad wearing it from that day? Police had evidence photos. No need physical.

Let's title "The Photograph".

I was cleaning encrypted personal archive.

Medical photos.

I had never looked after trial.

There it was.

Dad standing in bathroom mirror.

Coat half removed.

Bruises visible.

His face in reflection.

Terrified.

I closed immediately.

Then opened again.

Not to torture.

To see something else.

My own hand was in frame.

Holding his coat.

Steady.

I had always remembered shaking.

The photograph showed otherwise.

People remember fear as failure.

Sometimes body kept working.

Then I deleted my personal duplicate after confirming official records long archived and no legal need.

I did not need carry Dad’s bruises forever.

I kept one audio.

Not abuse statement.

A later recording from his eighty third birthday.

Dad laughing because Ruth had put eighty four candles on cake by mistake.

“That woman’s trying to age me.”

His voice.

That was the file I wanted.

Then Julian sent no more.

Chloe none.

No unfinished debt to me.

Restitution final accounting closed.

Estate finalized.

Trusts functioning.

No pending cases.

Then one evening my students asked about power of attorney.

I explained generally:

It grants authority.

Not ownership.

It does not erase duties.

It does not turn family assets into personal assets.

It can be revoked while principal competent.

And abuse can still be investigated.

No family anecdote.

But I thought of Dad.

Then a student asked:

“What if person signed because afraid?”

I answered:

“Then context matters.”

Exactly.

Signatures do not float alone.

Coercion leaves surrounding evidence.

Medical.

Digital.

Financial.

Witnesses.

Behavior.

Then:

“And if you are personally involved, get independent counsel and independent investigators.”

My lesson.

No hero prosecutor fantasy.

Then I went home.

On desk sat Dad’s old birthday card to me.

He had written:

Don’t let work make you forget who you are outside work.

May you like

I laughed.

He had been right long before I listened.
