Chapter 17 - The Wedding

We married in a small garden behind a historic inn outside Richmond.

No storage bins.

I checked.

Evan caught me checking.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Fair.”

Lily wore pale yellow again.

Her choice.

For months she refused the color because it reminded her of engagement party.

Then one day:

“I like yellow.”

Good.

Sophie chose green.

Not matching twins.

Important.

Madison wore blue.

Scott sat near aisle.

Marjorie beside Sophie’s therapist-approved family section.

There was no “bride’s family side.”

Too complicated.

We sat everyone together.

Before ceremony, Sophie asked:

“Who gives you away?”

“No one.”

“Why?”

“I’m not being given.”

She nodded.

Then:

“Can we walk?”

So Lily and Sophie walked with me halfway.

Evan met us.

No father.

No Diane.

No symbolism speech.

Just choice.

Then vows.

Evan said:

“I promise not to move your folders.”

Everyone who knew laughed.

I said:

“I promise not to accuse you of conspiracy when you move a coffee mug.”

Therapy humor.

Then after, Madison gave Sophie bracelet again.

The first one had broken.

New:

S + M.

Lily demanded:

“Where mine?”

Madison groaned.

“I brought one.”

Good.

Three girls.

No one made them sisters exactly.

Madison was cousin to twins.

But the relationship belonged to them.

Then Marjorie and I stood near cake.

She said:

“You look happy.”

“I am.”

Then:

“Thank you for bringing Sophie.”

Her face tightened.

“I didn’t bring her.”

Right.

She had to surrender.

I corrected:

“Thank you for loving her while I couldn't be there.”

She cried.

That sentence took years.

Then our family surname.

I remained Rachel Carter legally? After marriage could choose Brooks or keep Carter. The abusive family name Carter belonged to me too. I chose Rachel Carter-Brooks? User named Rachel Carter. Maybe she keeps Carter professionally and uses Brooks socially. Let's keep Rachel Carter after marriage because she did not want Nicole/Diane to own surname.

Evan did not care.

Sophie and Lily remained Carter.

No need change.

Then birth certificates.

State vital records investigation.

Sophie’s original birth registration had been incomplete, not finalized under normal name due fraudulent transfer.

Court ordered corrected delayed birth certificate:

Sophie Rose Carter.

Mother:

Rachel Carter.

Same birth date/time as Lily.

No father listed? The biological father had been established in prior paternity matter but later relinquished? Birth certificate may list. To avoid, say he was notified through counsel and did not contest correction; his prior legal status remained according to existing order. Fine.

Then death records.

There was never legal death certificate.

The memorial had been pure family lie.

No bureaucratic resurrection needed.

Just corrected birth.

Then Sophie asked:

“Was I dead on paper?”

“No.”

“Then only in your head?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

“That's weird.”

“Very.”

Then:

“Did you have funeral?”

“Memorial.”

“Can we undo?”

“No.”

She thought.

“Can we have alive party?”

I laughed.

We did.

Not huge.

At home.

Cupcakes.

A banner she made:

SOPHIE IS HERE.

No media.

No guests beyond family/friends.

She blew candles though not birthday.

Lily complained:

“She gets two parties.”

I said:

“True.”

Then Lily demanded “I found the bag” party.

We settled on ice cream.

Normal jealousy.

That was when I knew our house was becoming family rather than case management.

But the criminal appeals had not ended.

Nicole appealed.

Diane appealed portions of sentence despite plea limits.

Frank would eventually be released.

And my daughters would decide what, if anything, family meant when the people who stole Sophie came home.
