Chapter 1

The cherry blossoms drifted gently through the evening air.

Golden sunlight painted the public park in warm shades of pink and orange as couples strolled hand in hand beneath the blooming trees.

Children laughed nearby.

A violinist performed beside the fountain.

It was the perfect evening.

Or at least...

It was supposed to be.

Ethan Carter stood at the end of the paved pathway, nervously adjusting the sleeves of his dark suit.

His hands wouldn't stop shaking.

Hidden inside his jacket pocket was a small velvet ring box.

Not expensive.

Not covered in diamonds.

Just a simple white-gold ring he had spent nearly a year saving for.

To Ethan...

It was priceless.

Because it represented every dream he had built with one person.

Sophia.

They had met five years earlier in college.

She had believed in him when no one else did.

She had stayed beside him through unpaid internships, ramen dinners, tiny apartments, and impossible dreams.

Together they had promised each other one thing.

"We'll build our future together."

Tonight...

He intended to keep that promise.

Sophia appeared at the far end of the walkway.

She wore a flowing white dress that moved gently with the evening breeze.

She looked breathtaking.

When she saw Ethan waiting beneath the cherry blossoms...

Her smile appeared for only a second.

Then...

It disappeared.

A flicker of sadness crossed her face.

So quickly that Ethan never noticed.

He walked toward her with excitement.

"You made it."

She forced a smile.

"I said I would."

Around them, dozens of visitors slowed their pace.

Some recognized what was about to happen.

Phones quietly appeared.

People smiled knowingly.

A proposal.

Everyone loved watching a proposal.

Ethan took a deep breath.

"Sophia..."

"You've been my best friend."

"My greatest blessing."

"My home."

He slowly lowered himself onto one knee.

A wave of delighted whispers spread through the crowd.

"Oh my gosh..."

"He's proposing."

"Record this!"

More phones were raised.

The violinist stopped playing and smiled.

Even strangers gathered closer.

Ethan opened the ring box.

Inside, the small diamond caught the last rays of sunset.

"Sophia Williams..."

His voice trembled.

"Will you marry me?"

For one beautiful second...

The entire world stood still.

Sophia stared at the ring.

Tears immediately filled her eyes.

She wanted nothing more than to say yes.

Instead...

She slowly closed her eyes.

Then looked directly at Ethan.

Her expression became cold.

Emotionless.

Almost cruel.

Her voice rang out loudly enough for everyone to hear.

"I will never marry a poor man."

Silence.

Complete silence.

Ethan blinked.

"What?"

She took one step backward.

"I've wasted enough years pretending love is enough."

"It isn't."

People in the crowd gasped.

Someone whispered,

"That's brutal..."

Another person kept recording.

Sophia continued, forcing every word through the pain in her chest.

"I deserve someone successful."

"Someone wealthy."

"Someone who can actually give me the life I want."

She looked at the ring with visible disgust.

"Keep it."

"I don't want it."

The crowd erupted into murmurs.

Ethan remained frozen on one knee.

His face drained of all color.

"You..."

"...don't mean that."

Sophia swallowed hard.

"I do."

"I've never loved you enough to marry you."

The words shattered him.

The ring slipped from his trembling fingers onto the pavement.

Several people looked away.

Even strangers couldn't bear watching the humiliation.

Sophia turned around without another word.

She began walking away beneath the cherry blossoms.

Never once looking back.

Ethan stayed on his knees.

Unable to move.

Unable to breathe.

Five years.

Gone.

Reduced to a public spectacle filmed by hundreds of strangers.

The crowd slowly dispersed.

Some shook their heads sympathetically.

Others uploaded the videos online before leaving the park.

Within minutes...

The most painful moment of Ethan's life was spreading across the internet.

He didn't care.

Nothing mattered anymore.

Halfway down the pathway...

Sophia suddenly stopped.

Her shoulders trembled.

She pressed a hand against her mouth.

Then—

A violent cough escaped.

Another.

Then another.

She stumbled against a cherry blossom tree.

Her breathing became ragged.

No one noticed.

Except Ethan.

Despite everything...

He instinctively stood.

"Sophia?"

She tried to wave him away.

"Don't..."

Another cough interrupted her.

This time...

She couldn't stop.

A white handkerchief slipped from her hand and fluttered onto the pavement.

The wind caught it briefly before it settled near Ethan's feet.

He bent down to pick it up.

The moment he unfolded it...

His heart stopped.

Dark red blood stained nearly half the fabric.

Fresh.

Still wet.

His hands began to shake.

"Sophia..."

She quickly tried to snatch it back.

"No!"

But it was too late.

Several folded papers had also fallen from her handbag.

Medical records scattered across the stone path.

Ethan instinctively reached for them.

His eyes scanned the first page.

Then the second.

His breathing disappeared.

Across the top of the report, in bold black letters, were the words:

Diagnosis: Stage IV Lung Cancer

Below that...

Another sentence.

Estimated Life Expectancy: Less than Six Months.

The world around him faded into silence.

The crowd.

The sunset.

The cherry blossoms.

Everything disappeared.

Only one thought remained.

She hadn't rejected him because she didn't love him.

She was trying...

To save him from watching her die.

Sophia slowly looked up at him, tears streaming down her face.

For the first time that evening...

The cold mask she had worn finally broke.

In a trembling whisper, barely louder than the wind, she said,

"I'd rather you hate me..."

She closed her eyes.

"...than spend your life watching me die."

Ethan's knees nearly gave out.

Because in that single moment...

May you like

He realized the woman he loved hadn't broken his heart.

She had sacrificed her own.
