Chapter 24 - The Front Row

Margaret died at eighty one.
Peacefully after a stroke.
Daniel and Claire beside her.
I arrived hours before.
She could not speak clearly.
She saw me? She recognized.
Lifted fingers.
I held.
Then whispered:
“You know, you really did ruin that first wedding.”
Her eyes widened.
I laughed.
“Worth it.”
She smiled faintly.
Those were last clear moments.
After death, Daniel asked me speak at memorial.
I did.
The church.
Same church.
Of course.
I rolled down aisle.
Front row.
No fear.
I spoke:
“Margaret Callahan believed rules mattered until they interfered with doing what she thought was right.”
People laughed.
Then:
“She once stopped a wedding in middle of ceremony.”
More laughter from those who knew.
Then:
“She was right about why it should stop.”
I paused.
“And wrong to think she had to decide everything for everyone.”
Daniel smiled.
Then:
“She learned.”
I told about trust.
Not details.
About asking before helping.
About her becoming friend rather than rescuer.
Then:
“The most generous thing Margaret gave me was not legal help.”
“It was the experience of disagreeing with a powerful person and discovering she would still love me afterward.”
That was huge.
Derek? no.
Margaret could be challenged.
Then memorial.
Emily sat beside me.
No hiding.
After, Daniel hugged.
“Thank you.”
Then he said:
“Mom left you something.”
I groaned.
“No.”
“A book.”
Good.
Margaret’s old trusts textbook.
Inside note:
SARAH,
WHEN IN DOUBT, READ THE DOCUMENT.
AND IF SOMEONE TELLS YOU TO SIT IN BACK, CHECK WHETHER THEY OWN THE PEW.
LOVE,
MARGARET
I laughed until tears.
I kept book.
Then my mother died several years later? Not yet maybe final chapter. Could close with whole family older. Let's have Mom live to 82, later.
Then Sarah retired at sixty? We can time jump Chapter 25 maybe 25+ years after. Need full closure.
Before final, Emily’s daughter Lucy gets married perhaps. That gives symbolic front row with Sarah. Excellent.
At Chapter 24 end, Lucy announces engagement and asks Sarah:
“Aunt Sarah, will you sit with Mom in front row?”
Sarah smiles.
“Front row?”
“Obviously.”
Then no cycle. Good.
Let's do.
Years after Margaret’s memorial, Lucy became engaged.
She was twenty seven.
Emily called.
“You should hear from her.”
Lucy came.
“Aunt Sarah, I need ask something.”
My stomach jokingly tightened.
“Back row?”
She stared confused.
Emily groaned from hallway.
Lucy laughed once explained.
“No.”
Then:
“I want you and Mom together in front.”
Not because hero.
Because family.
I said yes.
One final wedding.
No secrets.
No trust transfer.
No whisper.

Maybe Chapter 25.
Continue to the next part: After Margaret’s death, the family returns to the same church one final time for a wedding where Sarah’s place is decided by love instead of appearance.
