Chapter 3 - THE WEDDING DOCUMENTS

My wedding was scheduled for twelve days later.

Two hundred guests had been invited to a ceremony at the mansion.

The florist had already covered a greenhouse wall with white roses.

The caterer had stocked the wine cellar.

My attorneys had prepared a prenuptial agreement.

I believed that agreement protected me.

Rebecca found the danger inside a separate packet.

Three days before the pool incident, Bianca’s attorney sent revised wedding documents to my executive assistant. The packet included insurance changes, residence acknowledgments, emergency medical authorizations, and trust administration forms.

My assistant placed them inside the folder I planned to sign the following morning.

Most were ordinary.

One was not.

The medical authorization named Bianca as my primary health representative immediately after marriage.

That alone was common.

An attached amendment allowed her to determine whether I could participate in business decisions during a medical emergency.

A second document directed my voting rights into temporary management if two approved physicians declared me impaired.

The approved physicians were Dr. Kline and Dr. Elias Voss.

Voss served on Adrian’s private foundation board.

If both men signed, Bianca would control my personal decisions while Adrian became temporary voting trustee.

“They planned to create symptoms in you,” Rebecca said.

“Using the same medication.”

“Most likely.”

“And call it a medical crisis.”

“Yes.”

“How long would they need?”

“Long enough to remove you from the board, activate the altered trust provisions, and complete the property transfers.”

The scheme depended on speed.

Martha would die in what appeared to be an accident caused by confusion.

I would marry Bianca while grieving and exhausted.

Medication would begin immediately.

Adrian would return publicly as the concerned brother trying to protect Hale Systems.

Bianca would become the devoted wife defending my privacy.

Every appearance of family concern would conceal another transfer of power.

The marriage itself did not give Bianca control of everything.

The forged documents did.

The false medical reports activated them.

My emotional dependence made me likely to sign without examining every page.

Rebecca showed me another file recovered from the west wing.

It contained draft statements for the board.

JULIAN HALE SUFFERS ACUTE STRESS RELATED COGNITIVE IMPAIRMENT FOLLOWING HIS MOTHER’S DEATH.

The wording was prepared before the pool incident.

“They wrote my diagnosis before harming her.”

“They wrote a public narrative,” Rebecca said. “The medical record would have followed.”

Martha was discharged after two nights under independent observation.

Her strength returned gradually.

Her memory remained clear once the altered medicine left her system.

She chose not to return to the mansion immediately.

We moved into a secure residence overlooking Long Island Sound. Only Rebecca, the independent medical team, and two trusted staff members knew the address.

Elaine came with us.

I expected Martha to distrust her.

Instead, my mother asked her to sit beside the window.

“You should have told Julian sooner,” Martha said.

“I know.”

“You were afraid.”

“Yes.”

“So was I.”

Elaine began crying.

Martha did not forgive everything in one conversation.

She acknowledged the truth.

Fear had silenced both women in different ways.

One was an employee whose pension had been threatened.

The other was an older woman whose clarity had been turned into evidence against her.

Bianca contacted me through her attorney.

She offered information in exchange for my promise not to support criminal charges.

Rebecca advised against private negotiations.

I agreed to one recorded meeting with counsel present.

Bianca entered wearing a simple black suit.

Without the evening gown, diamonds, and mansion lighting, she appeared younger.

That did not make her harmless.

“You think Adrian planned everything,” she said.

“Did he not?”

“He approached me eighteen months ago.”

“Before we became engaged.”

“Yes.”

“He selected you.”

Bianca’s eyes hardened.

“I was already dating you.”

“But you were reporting to him.”

She did not deny it.

Bianca had accumulated enormous private debt after supporting a luxury lifestyle she could not afford. Adrian discovered it through an investigator.

He offered to clear the debt if she became indispensable to me.

At first, she provided schedules and family information.

Then he revealed the trust structure.

“He said Martha stole his inheritance,” Bianca said.

“My father removed him from control.”

“Adrian said she manipulated your father.”

“And you believed him?”

“I believed the money.”

The honesty contained no remorse.

“Did Adrian order you to leave my mother in the pool?”

“He told me to make her sign.”

“You pressed your heel against her fingers.”

“She threatened to expose me.”

“So you decided she could die.”

Bianca looked away.

“I panicked.”

“No. Panic is uncontrolled. You locked the ladder and waited.”

She tried another approach.

“Adrian has evidence against your company.”

“What evidence?”

“Payments your father made before he died.”

“Where?”

“In the old family archive.”

“Why should I believe you?”

“Because Adrian was not hiding in the west wing only to control the pool.”

She leaned forward.

“He was searching for the original Hale trust.”

My father, Charles Hale, created the family trust six months before his death.

The official copy named Martha as lifetime protector.

After her incapacity or death, Adrian became interim protector until I reached forty.

I had reached thirty nine.

Adrian needed control for less than a year.

Rebecca had always found that provision strange.

My father distrusted Adrian by the end of his life.

Why would he name him interim protector?

Bianca claimed the official trust contained a substituted page.

The original removed Adrian entirely.

Martha knew.

That was why she had become dangerous.

Bianca looked directly at me.

“Your mother was not only going to expose our plan.”

May you like

“She was going to prove Adrian had been stealing from your family since before your father died.”

Continue to the next part: Martha reveals why Charles Hale removed Adrian from the trust, and Julian discovers that his brother’s betrayal began long before Bianca entered the mansion.
