Chapter 7 - THE MAN BEHIND VINCENT’S VOICE

The drainage tunnel smelled of saltwater and rust.
Federal agents entered first.
Damian followed without a weapon.
I remained between Caroline and the communications officer, wearing a microphone beneath my jacket.
Warehouse three rose above us through metal grating.
Samuel’s voice echoed from the main floor.
“Damian always needed a father to fight.”
Damian looked upward.
Samuel knew we were there.
A speaker activated inside the tunnel.
“For years, I used Vincent’s recordings to keep him obedient. One message from a dead man, and Damian destroyed whichever rival I named.”
Damian said nothing.
“Did you know?” I whispered.
“I suspected during the last year.”
“You continued.”
“I needed proof.”
“And how many people paid while you collected it?”
His jaw tightened.
“Too many.”
The answer belonged in the record.
We reached the freight vault.
Fuel lines ran around the archive shelves.
Samuel had connected them to an electronic trigger.
Lily and Martha sat inside the central cage.
Rafe guarded them.
Samuel stood near the control panel holding a pistol and a remote device.
“Come out, Harper,” he called.
Caroline shook her head.
I stepped only into the protected doorway.
“You lost the reserve.”
“Patrick can reverse the reversal.”
“No.”
“Then I no longer need his daughters.”
Rafe raised the pistol toward Lily.
Martha moved in front of her.
Damian stepped into view.
“Samuel.”
Rafe turned toward him.
That movement gave Lily one second.
She struck the side of his knee with the metal support from her leg brace.
Rafe fell.
Martha grabbed his wrist.
The pistol fired into the ceiling.
Federal agents entered from the loading platform.
Samuel pressed the remote.
Nothing happened.
Patrick had remembered the warehouse fuel system used a separate mechanical safety valve beneath the tunnel. Caroline’s team closed it before entry.
Samuel stared at the dead trigger.
Damian crossed the floor.
Samuel aimed at him.
I shouted.
Damian turned as the shot fired.
The bullet struck his upper arm.
He continued moving.
He caught Samuel’s wrist and drove the pistol away from Lily.
Samuel struggled beneath him.
“You think handing me to courts makes you better than Vincent?”
“No.”
Damian held his arm until federal agents secured him.
“It makes the ending belong to more than me.”
Rafe attempted to crawl toward the dropped weapon.
Martha kicked it beyond his reach.
“I have arthritis,” she told him. “Not poor aim.”
Agents freed Lily.
I ran to her.
She wrapped both arms around me.
“You keep coming.”
“So do you.”
Martha’s face was bruised, but she remained alert.
Damian sat against a metal support while a medic treated the gunshot.
He looked toward Samuel being placed in restraints.
“Was Vincent dead the entire time?”
Samuel smiled.
“Your father died begging me to tell you he was proud.”
Damian’s face changed.
Samuel wanted the last word to become another weapon.
Patrick’s voice entered through Caroline’s radio.
“He is lying.”
Everyone looked toward the speaker.
Patrick had accessed the archive audio remotely.
A recording from Vincent’s final night remained inside the vault.
His voice sounded weak.
“Damian will come for me.”
Samuel answered:
“He believes you died.”
“You cannot control him forever.”
“I do not need forever.”
Vincent laughed painfully.
“My son will destroy you.”
The recording ended with a gunshot.
Samuel had killed Vincent seven years earlier and used his identity afterward.
Damian closed his eyes.
The father who brutalized him had not offered affection in death.
Only confidence that his son would continue the violence.
Damian refused to fulfill it.
Federal technicians preserved the archive.
It contained proof of murders, bribery, laundering, extortion, and public contracts.
One active account carried my full legal name.
HARPER ELAINE QUINN.
Balance:
Ninety six million dollars.
Caroline looked toward me.
“Do you know about this?”
“No.”
Samuel laughed from the floor.
“Ask Patrick why his daughter owns the cleanest account in the Croft network.”
The reserve had exposed everyone.
May you like
Now it made me appear to be one of them.
Continue to the next part: Harper must prove the fortune in her name was created without her knowledge while Damian faces prosecution for the empire he inherited and expanded.
