Chapter 4

The morning of the wedding arrived wrapped in a soft blanket of sea fog.

Emily stood alone in the bridal suite, staring at her reflection.

The white gown fit perfectly.

The veil rested lightly on her shoulders.

Everything looked exactly as she had imagined when she was a little girl.

Except for one thing.

She had never imagined practicing how to smile before marrying the love of her life.

A gentle knock came at the door.

Her father peeked inside.

"You ready?"

Emily forced a smile.

"As ready as I'll ever be."

He stepped inside, adjusting the cuff of his suit jacket.

For a long moment, neither of them spoke.

Finally he said quietly,

"I owe you an apology."

Emily frowned.

"For what?"

"I spent weeks trying to convince you not to do this."

She shook her head.

"You were trying to protect me."

"I was."

He looked down.

"But I realized something."

"What?"

"I kept asking whether Daniel deserved to become your husband."

He smiled sadly.

"I never stopped to ask whether you deserved to spend the rest of your life with the man you love."

Emily hugged him tightly.

"I do."

"So does he."

Meanwhile, Daniel stood near the edge of the cliff with his best friend, Ethan.

The ocean stretched endlessly before them.

"You nervous?"

Daniel laughed.

"I'm getting married."

"I'm pretty sure nervous is required."

Ethan smiled.

"You still have time to run."

Daniel looked toward the empty aisle.

"I've already been running."

"From what?"

"The future."

He took a deep breath.

"I can't outrun it anymore."

Ethan placed a hand on his shoulder.

"You don't have to."

"You just have to show up today."

Daniel nodded.

"I can do today."

Guests slowly filled the white chairs arranged beneath the floral arch.

The violinists began to play.

The sun dipped lower over the horizon, bathing everything in warm gold.

Daniel stood beside the officiant, trying to steady his breathing.

Then the music changed.

Everyone rose.

Emily appeared at the end of the aisle.

For a heartbeat...

The entire world disappeared.

Daniel had seen her thousands of times.

Without makeup.

In oversized sweaters.

Covered in flour after baking disasters.

Half asleep on Sunday mornings.

Yet somehow...

She had never looked more beautiful than she did walking toward him now.

Tears blurred his vision.

Ethan whispered,

"Breathe."

Daniel laughed through his tears.

"I'm trying."

Emily reached him.

Without thinking, Daniel took both her hands.

"You came."

She smiled.

"You asked."

"I wasn't sure you'd still want to."

Emily tilted her head.

"What could possibly stop me?"

Daniel couldn't answer.

Because he knew.

The disease.

Time.

Fear.

Loss.

Yet somehow...

She was still here.

The officiant smiled warmly.

"We gather today not only to celebrate love..."

"...but to celebrate courage."

He looked at the couple.

"Marriage is rarely a promise that life will be easy."

"It is a promise that no one has to face life alone."

Daniel squeezed Emily's hand.

She squeezed back.

When it was time for the vows, Emily reached into her bouquet.

Instead of unfolding a piece of paper...

She pulled out a small photograph.

It showed two college students sitting on the hood of an old car, laughing beneath a sky full of stars.

Daniel smiled immediately.

"Our second date."

Emily nodded.

"I wanted to remind you."

"You still remember."

"For now."

She held the photograph against her heart.

Then began.

"When I met you..."

"I thought love meant finding the right person."

She looked into his eyes.

"You taught me that love is choosing the same person..."

"...again and again."

Her voice trembled.

"So today..."

"I make that choice."

"I promise to love you when life is easy."

"I promise to love you when life is unfair."

"I promise to laugh with you."

"To cry with you."

"To fight for you..."

"...even on the days when you no longer know you're worth fighting for."

Daniel's eyes filled with tears.

Emily continued.

"And if the day comes..."

"...when you look at me and see a stranger..."

"I won't ask you to remember."

"I'll simply give you a reason to smile."

"And I'll introduce myself."

"My name is Emily."

"I've loved you for a lifetime."

"And I'd like the chance..."

"...to love you all over again."

A quiet sob echoed from the front row.

Then another.

By the time Emily finished, nearly everyone was crying.

Daniel wiped his face before speaking.

"I spent weeks trying to write the perfect vows."

He smiled.

"I kept throwing them away."

"Nothing sounded important enough."

He looked at Emily.

"So I'll tell you the only truth I know."

"You are my safest place."

"My favorite conversation."

"My greatest adventure."

"My home."

He paused.

"I don't know how many memories I'll keep."

"I don't know which ones I'll lose first."

"But while I still remember..."

"I need you to know this."

"You were never my second chance."

"You were my first."

"My last."

"My everything."

Emily quietly wept.

Daniel continued.

"If tomorrow I forget your face..."

"I hope my heart remembers how it feels when you hold my hand."

"If next year I forget your name..."

"I hope I'll still smile every time you walk into the room."

"And if one day..."

"...everything disappears..."

He gently touched her cheek.

"I hope you'll forgive me."

Emily shook her head immediately.

"There will be nothing to forgive."

The officiant looked at them both.

"Do you, Daniel Harper..."

Before he could finish...

Daniel suddenly frowned.

His expression changed.

He blinked several times.

Emily felt her stomach tighten.

Daniel looked around the cliff.

Confused.

Very confused.

"Ethan..."

His voice was barely audible.

"What..."

"...are we doing here?"

Silence.

Absolute silence.

The guests froze.

The officiant stopped speaking.

Emily's heartbeat thundered inside her chest.

Daniel looked back at her.

His eyes searched her face politely.

"I'm sorry..."

"Have we met?"

The words struck harder than any knife.

Emily couldn't breathe.

For several endless seconds...

No one moved.

Ethan took one step forward.

The officiant looked helpless.

Someone in the audience quietly began to cry.

Daniel looked embarrassed.

"I'm sorry."

"I feel like..."

"I should know everyone."

"But..."

He rubbed his forehead.

"I can't think."

Emily slowly walked toward him.

Every instinct inside her wanted to fall apart.

Instead...

She smiled.

Exactly as she had promised.

She held out her hand.

"Hi."

Daniel stared at her.

"My name is Emily."

"It's very nice to meet you."

He looked at her hand.

Then shook it.

"I'm Daniel."

"It's nice to meet you too."

A tear rolled down Emily's cheek.

She laughed softly.

"I've heard wonderful things about you."

Daniel smiled.

"Really?"

"The best."

He chuckled nervously.

"I feel like I've forgotten something important."

Emily squeezed his hand.

"You have."

"But that's okay."

She gently lifted his left hand.

The wedding ring was already waiting beside the officiant.

"You'll remember the important part soon enough."

Daniel looked down at the ring.

For a long moment...

He said nothing.

Then something changed.

Not recognition.

Not memory.

Just...

Emotion.

He looked back into Emily's eyes.

"I don't know why..."

"...but when I look at you..."

"I feel safe."

Emily's tears flowed freely now.

"You always did."

The officiant quietly asked,

"Would you like a moment?"

Daniel looked at Emily.

She nodded once.

"No."

She whispered.

"We've already waited long enough."

Daniel smiled.

Without understanding why...

He took her hands again.

And somehow...

May you like

Even without the memories...

His fingers fit perfectly around hers.
