Chapter 17 - Margaret’s Guardianship Years
Margaret rarely spoke about the four years she raised Noah.
Because she feared making Rachel feel replaced.
That silence became its own problem.
At Noah twenty, he asked:
“Grandma, were those years hard?”
She said:
“No.”
I laughed from kitchen.
“Liar.”
Margaret glared.
Then sighed.
“Yes.”
Colic.
Cardiology.
Court visits.
Supervised handoffs.
Night feeds at sixty-one.
Paperwork.
Fear Rachel would relapse.
Fear she would not.
Love.
Then Noah asked:
“Did you want to adopt me?”
Margaret said:
“For moments, yes.”
Rachel was sitting there.
Everyone breathed carefully.
Then:
“But I also wanted your mother to become safe enough to parent you.”
“Which more?”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“Depends on day.”
Honesty.
Rachel cried.
“Thank you.”
“For what?”
“Not pretending you were saint.”
Then Noah:
“Did Mom hate you?”
Margaret:
“Sometimes.”
Rachel:
“Very much.”
They laughed.
Then Margaret admitted something:
“When court returned you, I stayed in your empty room and cried all night.”
Rachel looked stunned.
“You never told.”
“You had enough guilt.”
“That wasn't yours to hide.”
Interesting.
They learned truth not always burden.
Then Margaret:
“I thought telling would make you think I wanted you fail.”
Rachel:
“I already thought.”
Both laughed through tears.
Then Noah said:
“Everyone in this family needs hobbies.”
Correct.
Margaret had gardening.
Rachel yoga? Fine.
Then at age twenty-one, Noah changed? He remained Hayes? His legal surname at birth likely Hayes or Cole? User says Baby Noah Rachel and Derek. Could be Noah Hayes because father's surname. “So Grandma adopted you and then raised me.”

Then he asked whether Margaret "stole" Rachel from birth family like Derek said.
Rachel explained foster/adoption due court decisions, not theft.
Derek had weaponized adoption language.
Noah confronted father later.
“You said Grandma stole Mom.”
Derek:
“I was trying to isolate her.”
“Why?”
“Because if she trusted Margaret, she might leave me.”

“That's disgusting.”
