Ethan had spent his childhood managing Patricia’s emotions.
His father died when Ethan was fourteen.
After that, Patricia told him he was the man of the house.
She discussed bills with him.
Asked whether she should trust coworkers.
Expected him to cancel plans whenever she felt lonely.
Courtney was younger and learned a different role.
She supported Patricia before Patricia needed to ask.

“Yes.”
“You treated boundaries like cruelty because she cried whenever you said no.”
Ethan lowered his head.
“I thought keeping peace protected everyone.”
“It protected the person creating conflict.”
The counselor allowed the silence to remain.
Ethan did not ask Hannah to reassure him.
He did not explain how difficult Patricia could be.
He said:
“I made your safety dependent on you proving my mother intended harm.”
Hannah’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“I should have acted when you said you were afraid.”
“Yes.”
“I am sorry.”
She looked at Owen.
“Sorry does not make me trust you with decisions yet.”
“I understand.”
“Do you?”
“I will follow whatever boundaries you set while we determine that.”
Hannah asked Ethan to stay in a separate apartment temporarily.
He agreed.
He visited Owen according to a schedule she helped design.
He did not use fatherhood to demand access to Hannah’s recovery.
Every evening, he sent one message.
Do you need groceries, medication, or transportation?
If Hannah answered no, he accepted it.

Hannah showed exhaustion, dehydration, fear, infection, and emotional distress.
She did not show the symptoms Patricia described.
Even if she had, tying her wrists, withholding communication, and refusing medical care would not have become lawful treatment.
Courtney attempted to minimize her role.
“I thought Mom knew what she was doing.”
“Did Hannah ask to leave?” Detective Reyes asked.
“Yes.”
“Did you block the door?”
“Yes.”
“Did she ask for her phone?”
“Yes.”
“Did you return it?”
“No.”
“Did you help restrain her?”
“I held her arm.”
“Did she consent?”
“No.”
“Did you believe she was a danger?”
“My mother said she was.”
“Did you call a doctor?”
“No.”
“Did you call emergency services?”
“No.”
“Did you call Ethan?”
“No.”

“I was trying to help my family.”
