Chapter 7 - THE SON THEY INTENDED TO SACRIFICE

Marcus entered the boardroom at three in the afternoon.
He wore the same calm expression he had used during every financial presentation for twelve years.
Three directors joined him in person.
Four appeared by video.
They had received an emergency notice claiming I admitted responsibility for corporate fraud and resigned voluntarily.
The document carried my signature and authentic digital seal.
Marcus presented a medical statement declaring me emotionally compromised after a domestic crisis.
Rebecca signed it.
He then requested temporary authority to protect Brooks Meridian from scandal.
The plan almost worked.
Boards did not always accept lies because lies were perfect.
They accepted them because the person presenting them sounded familiar.
Marcus had explained the company’s finances for decades.
I was the chief executive whose certificate appeared on stolen transfers.
He sounded stable.
I looked guilty.
Claire and I entered five minutes after the meeting began.
My access card failed at the main entrance.
An independent compliance officer admitted us through a visitor route.
Marcus did not look surprised.
“Daniel, your presence may expose the board to additional liability.”
“My resignation is forged.”
“We received it from your secure account.”
“My secure account was compromised.”
“That is what individuals often claim after misconduct becomes visible.”
I placed no faith in anger.
Claire presented the preserved office footage.
Margaret and Marcus entering my safe.
The cloned security key.
The blue folder.
The board watched without speaking.
Marcus remained calm.
“Margaret asked me to recover family documents. That does not prove I created fraudulent transfers.”
The forensic audit director entered remotely.
She displayed the vendor ownership network.
Every shell company led toward Marcus, Rebecca, or Brooks Family Holdings.
Marcus called the analysis preliminary.
Then he placed the original trust key on the table.
“This key proves Charles intended family leadership to remain under the structure Margaret and I are protecting.”
Claire studied it.
“Where did you get that?”
“Charles gave it to me.”
“My records show the key disappeared after his death.”
“Your records are incomplete.”
He inserted it into the board authorization reader.
The system recognized the physical object.
A second prompt appeared.
TRUST PROTECTOR CONFIRMATION REQUIRED.
Marcus looked toward Margaret’s empty chair.
He expected her biometric approval.
Her authority had ended years earlier.
Claire opened my father’s sealed amendment.
Charles removed Margaret as trust protector after discovering the first theft.
He appointed an interim protector whose identity remained confidential until coercion, incapacity fraud, or unauthorized family transfer occurred.
The trigger had activated when the foyer camera recorded Margaret abusing Emma.
The board screen changed.
INTERIM TRUST PROTECTOR RECOGNIZED.
Emma Brooks appeared through a secure hospital video connection.
Marcus finally lost control of his expression.
Emma wore a simple blue dress. Her hair rested loosely over one shoulder. She looked tired.
She did not look powerless.
My father had named her three years earlier.
He met Emma during his final year, when she worked in the accounting department of one of our restaurants.
She discovered a supplier discrepancy and reported it despite pressure from management.
Charles investigated her judgment, not her income or family name.
After Emma and I became engaged, he amended the trust.
He did not give her ownership.
He gave her the authority to suspend transfers when family members used coercion.
Emma never knew until Claire explained it after the trigger activated.
Marcus stared at the screen.
“She is not qualified.”
Emma answered calmly.
“I do not need to run the company. I need to approve or deny emergency changes while independent experts review them.”
“This is a family business.”
“I am carrying the next beneficiary.”
“You manipulated Charles.”
“I met him six times.”
“He was medicated.”
“The amendment was signed before Rebecca altered his treatment.”
Claire presented the medical timeline.
Marcus looked toward me.
“You would allow your wife to control your father’s company?”
“No. I will allow the trust to function as written.”
Emma denied Marcus’s emergency transfer.
The system froze Brooks Family Holdings.
The original key deactivated.
Marcus’s board access ended.
The three directors who supported him requested time to obtain counsel.
No one was arrested in the room.
Independent investigators preserved every device.
Marcus stood.
“You think this ends because a pregnant woman pressed a button?”
“No,” Emma said. “It begins because people finally stopped assuming you were the only person who understood the system.”
He left under supervision.
The audit continued.
The forged resignation was traced to Rebecca’s clinic server.
The financial network reached forty two million dollars.
Some money remained recoverable.
Some had funded luxury properties.
Some moved offshore.
One transfer led to an account in the Cayman Islands under my name.
Marcus prepared an escape route that made me appear the final beneficiary.
He intended me to carry criminal responsibility.
Margaret would be declared unstable.
Rebecca would disappear again.
Marcus would control the remaining companies through emergency debt.
Every person around him had been temporary.
That evening, investigators discovered the trust key he carried was not the only missing item.
My father’s handwritten transaction ledger had vanished from the archive.
The ledger could connect Marcus directly to the earliest thefts and Rebecca’s false medical company.
Security footage showed Marcus leaving headquarters without it.
Someone else removed it before the meeting.
The access record belonged to Victoria Lane.
Rebecca had escaped court supervised medical custody two hours earlier.

She was driving toward the Brooks family’s abandoned mountain lodge with the ledger and a case of my father’s original medication.
Continue to the next part: Rebecca’s stolen ledger may prove what happened during Charles’s final weeks, but reaching it forces Emma to confront the woman who built the false medical case against her unborn child.
