Chapter 19 - Leonard and Veronica
Leonard told me later.
Not every word.
Enough.
Veronica entered first.
Older.
No glamour.
No prison uniform now.
Simple blouse.
She stood.
“Leonard.”
He sat.
Then:
“I am not here to reconcile.”
“I know.”
“Do not ask.”
“I will not.”
Good.
Then he asked:
“When did I stop being husband and become problem?”
Veronica cried.
“Before accident.”
“How long?”
“When you found consulting payments.”
There.
Then:
“Before that, I was controlling.”
“Yes.”
“But I still thought I was protecting marriage.”
“And after?”
“I started protecting myself.”
Clear.
Then:
“Did you want me dead before Wednesday?”
“No.”
“Did you imagine?”
She hesitated.
“I searched what happens if spouse dies.”
“Yes.”
“Because estate.”
“Yes.”
“Did you wish?”
Silence.
“Sometimes I thought life would be easier if you stopped questioning everything.”
Ugly.
But not same as murder plan.
Then:
“When Lawrence called after collision, did you think I might die?”
“Yes.”
“Were you relieved?”
She cried.
“For a few seconds.”
Leonard almost left.
Then stayed.
“Thank you for truth.”
Then fake identity.
“Why John Vale?”
“My mother’s maiden name Vale. John was common.”
Then:
“Why sister?”
“To avoid spouse records connecting.”
Then:
“Did you tell doctors I was violent knowing I was not?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know medications made me slower?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ask for more drugs?”
“No.”
Evidence agreed.
Then funeral.
“Did you look at Caleb?”
“Yes.”
“Did you know he was not me?”
“Yes.”
“Did you put ring on him?”
“Funeral director did after I delivered.”
“Did you watch?”
“No.”
Then:
“Did you think about his daughter?”
“I did not know.”
“You did not check.”
“No.”
Then:
“Did you think my mother might come?”
“I believed no.”
“Why?”
“Because I made both of you think other rejected.”
There.
Then:
“When she appeared?”
“I knew it was over.”
Then Leonard asked:
“Do you think you loved me?”
“Yes.”
“How could you?”
Veronica said:
“Love did not stop me from treating you like something I had to control.”
That line.
Then apology.
No excuses.
Then:
“Do you expect forgiveness?”
“No.”
Leonard said:
“I forgive you.”
She started crying.
Then:
“I do not want relationship.”
“I know.”
Then:
“I do not want updates.”
“Okay.”
“No birthdays.”
“Okay.”
“No messages through Anne.”
“Okay.”
Then:
“You do not get to use forgiveness as door.”
“I understand.”
Meeting ended.
No hug.
Leonard came farm.
“Do you regret?”
“No.”
“Feel better?”
“No.”
“Worse?”
“No.”
Then:
“Done?”
“Yes.”
That was closure.
Veronica never contacted again.
Not because disappeared.
Because she respected no.
Years later, Leonard heard she moved east to care for sister.
No details.
He did not ask.
Then I thought:
Change exists even when it does not earn restoration.
