Chapter 2

Nathan stared at the ivory envelope.

His hands trembled.

"Where did you get this?"

Clara didn't answer immediately.

She looked at Owen instead.

"I think he should read it first."

Nathan wanted to protest.

Every instinct told him to grab the letter.

To confirm whether it was real.

Or some impossible mistake.

But Owen had already broken the seal.

Inside...

There was only one folded page.

The paper had yellowed with age.

The familiar scent of lavender still lingered.

The same perfume Grace had worn every day.

Owen swallowed hard.

Then he began reading aloud.

"My dearest Owen..."

His voice immediately broke.

"If you're reading this, it means I'm no longer beside you on your birthday."

Nathan slowly sat down.

His knees suddenly felt weak.

Grace had written this knowing she wouldn't live long enough to give it to their son herself.

Owen continued.

"I know you'll be angry that I left too soon."

"I wish I could have stayed."

"I wish I could have watched you grow into the incredible man I already know you'll become."

Tears streamed down his face.

Nathan quietly wiped his own eyes.

He hadn't cried in years.

Not since the funeral.

The next paragraph was addressed to both of them.

"And Nathan..."

Nathan froze.

"I know what you're going to do."

"You're going to work longer."

"You'll convince yourself that if you stay busy enough, grief can't catch you."

A painful smile appeared on Nathan's face.

She knew him.

Even before she was gone.

Grace had predicted exactly how he would survive her loss.

"But our son doesn't need a successful father."

"He needs his dad."

Nathan lowered his head.

Every word felt like a mirror.

He remembered the missed birthdays.

The canceled family dinners.

The endless business trips.

He had told himself he was earning security for Owen's future.

But Owen had never wanted more money.

He had wanted his father.

Owen reached the final page.

"If today feels lonely..."

"Close your eyes when you taste the cake."

"I'll be there."

The kitchen became completely silent.

Neither of them could speak.

Finally...

Nathan looked toward Clara.

"How did you find this?"

Clara smiled gently.

"Mrs. Whitmore asked me to."

Nathan frowned.

"What?"

Clara walked toward the old cookbook still resting on the kitchen counter.

"A year before she passed away..."

"I worked part-time at the hospice where she stayed."

Nathan's eyes widened.

"You knew Grace?"

Clara nodded.

"Not for long."

"But long enough."

"She knew she didn't have much time left."

"So she started preparing birthday letters."

"Christmas letters."

"Graduation letters."

She looked at Owen.

"She said there would be days when love would need help finding its way home."

Nathan felt tears fill his eyes again.

"So she trusted you?"

Clara nodded softly.

"She asked me to deliver them only when your family truly needed them."

Nathan looked around the kitchen.

For the first time since Grace's death...

The mansion didn't feel empty.

It felt like she had never really left.

Then Clara reached into the same apron pocket once more.

Nathan watched in confusion.

She slowly placed three more sealed ivory envelopes on the marble countertop.

Each one had Grace's handwriting.

One read:

"For Owen's Wedding Day."

Another:

"For The Day You Become a Father."

The last one...

Made Nathan stop breathing.

Across the front were six simple words.

"For Nathan... When He Forgives Himself."

Nathan couldn't move.

Because he suddenly realized...

May you like

Grace hadn't only left letters for Owen.

She had left one to save him too.
