Chapter 9 - The Signature Beneath the Seal

Forensic analysts confirmed three facts.
Grant’s signature was genuine.
Catherine’s was not.
Arthur’s trust seal was genuine, but the ink came from a batch manufactured only five years earlier.
The page had been created long after Catherine disappeared.
Someone assembled an old crime using new materials.
Malcolm denied it.
“He had no reason to deny anything now,” Detective Reese said. “But that does not make him truthful.”
The hidden page transferred Catherine’s voting authority into a holding company called Northstar Vance.
No public record existed for the company.
Julia traced it through a chain of trusts to an offshore foundation registered in Switzerland.
The foundation’s authorized beneficiary was listed only by initials.
E.V.
Arthur recognized them.
He refused to explain until Catherine and I were both present.
We met inside a secure Vance Continental conference room.
My mother sat across from the man who had mourned her publicly and abandoned the official search privately. They looked like people separated by more than twelve years.
Arthur opened an old family file.
Before marrying Catherine, he had been engaged to a woman named Eleanor Vale.
Eleanor worked beside him during the earliest years of Vance Continental. She designed the trust structure that later protected the port holdings.
Their engagement ended after Arthur discovered she had sold confidential shipping routes to Malcolm.
Eleanor disappeared.
Arthur believed she moved overseas.
Three months later, he met Catherine.
“Did Mom know?”
“Yes.”
Catherine looked toward him.
“You told me Eleanor died.”
Arthur’s face changed.
“I was told she did.”
Again, a death confirmed through paperwork.
Again, no body he had personally identified.
Eleanor Vale.
E.V.
The hidden foundation carried her initials.
Julia compared archived trust language.
The protective clause Grant signed had been copied from a structure Eleanor drafted thirty years earlier.
Malcolm understood the system because Eleanor taught him.
If she was alive, Malcolm might not have been the architect.
He might have been another manager.
Catherine remembered seeing a woman at Grayhaven during her first year of captivity.
Silver hair.
A scar beneath one eye.
The woman never gave her name.
She examined Catherine’s fingerprints and asked whether Claire resembled Arthur.
Malcolm treated her with unusual respect.
Arthur contacted old intelligence sources in Europe.
Eleanor Vale had entered the United States twice under diplomatic credentials connected to a private humanitarian organization.
The most recent entry occurred eleven days earlier.
The same day Grant signed Schedule C.
She had returned before the assault.
Detective Reese reviewed the mansion security footage again.
At 4:17 on the afternoon of the attack, Malcolm entered Grant’s study.
A woman accompanied him wearing a dark coat and medical mask.
Vanessa had assumed she was Malcolm’s assistant.
The woman never removed her gloves.
The camera captured only her eyes.
Catherine recognized them.
“That is her.”
Eleanor had been inside my home while Grant and Vanessa prepared to drug me.
She had witnessed the plan.
She might have shaped it.
Arthur received a video call from an encrypted number.
Eleanor appeared on screen.
She looked older than the photographs, but her posture remained elegant.
“Arthur.”
He stood slowly.
“You used my seal.”
“You used my trust.”
“You were declared dead.”
“So was Catherine. Your family has always accepted convenient funerals.”
I moved closer.
“What do you want?”
Eleanor studied my face.
“To see whether Catherine’s daughter understands what she inherited.”
“You helped Malcolm kidnap my mother.”
“I helped preserve the company your father would have lost.”
“By imprisoning her?”
“Catherine possessed evidence that would have destroyed Vance Continental, Whitmore Development, and thousands of pensions.”
The same justification.
Save the company.
Protect the family.
Sacrifice the person.
Eleanor claimed Malcolm became unstable and greedy. She never ordered the assault, the sedative, or my planned confinement.
She only created conditions that allowed Grant’s management rights to transfer into my trust.
“Why?”
“Because Arthur is dying.”
I looked at my father.
His expression told me the statement was true.
He had concealed a heart condition for nearly a year.
Eleanor continued.
“Vance Continental requires a successor. Arthur intended to appoint you after your next birthday. Malcolm intended to control you through Grant.”
“And you?”
“I intend to test whether you can control yourself.”
A file arrived through Julia’s secure computer.
It contained evidence of illegal medical shipments inside Blue Meridian containers.
Every record identified Claire Vance Whitmore as beneficial owner.
Federal agents were already reviewing the files.
Eleanor had released them.
“You framed me.”
“I revealed what exists under your name.”
“I never authorized it.”
“Neither did the families harmed by the devices your trust transported.”
Arthur moved toward the screen.
“Leave Claire out of this.”
“You placed her inside it when you hid the trust.”
The call ended.
Seconds later, federal investigators entered the building with a warrant for my financial records.
Arthur’s emergency protocol could not stop them.

The same document that gave me control of Grant’s empire now made me responsible for its crimes.
Continue to the next part: Claire must prove she did not authorize the illegal shipments before Eleanor uses the scandal to seize both family companies.
