Chapter 4 - THE POLICY WRITTEN BEFORE THE FALL
The investigation began with money.
Michael had increased Emma’s insurance coverage eighteen months before the trip.
He claimed the change was required by investors in Mason Medical Technologies.
No investor had requested it.
He used a physician who belonged to his country club to certify that Emma was healthy and understood the policy structure.
She had never met the doctor.
Her signature appeared on documents she did not remember signing.
A forensic examiner found that several pages had been inserted into a larger estate package after Emma signed the final page.
The policy itself was real.
The application process was not.
Ashley had arranged the appointments, notarization, and electronic submissions.
Her emails contained repeated questions about accidental death exclusions.
ASHLEY: WOULD A FALL DURING A HIKING TRIP QUALIFY?
BROKER: DEPENDS ON THE INVESTIGATION.
ASHLEY: WHAT IF THE BODY IS NOT RECOVERED?
BROKER: PAYMENT WOULD REQUIRE LEGAL PROOF OF DEATH AND ADDITIONAL REVIEW.
Ashley had forwarded that answer to Michael.
His reply contained four words.
THEN WE CONTROL THE STORY.
Investigators searched Michael’s vehicle.
They found two sets of climbing traction devices.
One pair had been used.
The other remained clean.
Emma remembered Michael insisting she did not need traction because the trail was easy.
Receipts showed he purchased both pairs on the same day.
A torn section of Emma’s cream cardigan was recovered near the overlook.
Her blood marked the stone where she struck the ledge below.
Footprints showed Michael and Ashley approaching the edge, then walking away together.
No prints suggested Michael attempted to descend or seek help.
His emergency call came forty three minutes later from a parking area.
He told dispatch he had searched for Emma until the storm became too dangerous.
Location records showed he spent most of that period inside the heated vehicle with Ashley.
Emma’s phone provided the strongest evidence.
Digital specialists recovered the complete recording.
Michael’s voice said:
“Once you are gone, the trust cannot hide behind the baby.”
Emma answered:
“What are you talking about?”
Ashley said:
“Stop explaining it to her.”
Then came the shove.
Wind.
Emma screaming.
Michael’s voice above the cliff.
“Neither you nor the baby will suffer long.”
Later, the device captured their conversation while they believed Emma lay dying.
“For fifty million dollars, she better be dead.”
The recording did not show the shove visually.
Audio experts authenticated the voices and found no evidence of editing.
It became powerful when combined with location data, financial records, and physical evidence.
Ashley panicked first.
She received a message from an unknown number containing a photograph of the funeral flowers.
Beneath it were three words.
SHE HEARD EVERYTHING.
The message came from investigators conducting a controlled interview strategy.
Ashley called Michael immediately.
“What if the phone survived?”
“It didn’t.”
“You didn’t check.”
“She fell hundreds of feet.”
“You said she landed on a ledge.”
Michael became silent.
Ashley’s breathing quickened.
“You saw her alive.”
“Barely.”
“And you walked away.”
“You were there.”
“I never touched her.”
“You helped plan the trip.”
“I thought you were going to frighten her into signing the trust papers.”
Michael laughed coldly.
“You researched death claims.”
“Because you told me to.”
“You chose the trail.”
“You chose the cliff.”
The call gave investigators something the funeral recording had not.
Division.
Each suspected the other might cooperate first.
Ashley met detectives with an attorney the following morning.
She admitted knowing about the insurance scheme and helping conceal her presence on the mountain.
She denied knowing Michael intended to push Emma until moments before it happened.
Messages challenged that denial.
ASHLEY: MAKE SURE THE PLACE IS STEEP ENOUGH.
MICHAEL: IT IS.
ASHLEY: NO WITNESSES?
MICHAEL: ONLY SNOW.
Ashley eventually admitted she understood Emma might die.
She claimed Michael promised she would not witness the actual act.
Her cooperation did not make her innocent.
It established different roles.
Michael was arrested at the house while searching Emma’s office for the trust documents.
Ashley was arrested after leaving her attorney’s building.
Both learned Emma was alive only after being taken into custody.
Detective Sarah Lin placed Emma’s hospital photograph on the interview table.
Michael stared at it.
The color drained from his face.
“That isn’t possible.”
Detective Lin said nothing.
“She fell.”
Silence.
“She could not have survived.”
Detective Lin leaned forward.
