Chapter 15 - The Trap Inside the Truth

The realization changed everything.

Margaret had not been helping.

She had been guiding.

The safe-deposit key led Caleb to Victor.

The old files pushed him toward the lake.

Every revelation had moved him exactly where someone wanted.

“Why expose you?” Caleb asked.

Victor looked tired.

“Because I’m the last living witness who can prove what she did.”

“What did she do?”

Victor hesitated.

Caleb slammed his hand on the table.

“Enough.”

Victor nodded.

“Evelyn didn’t kill herself.”

Caleb went still.

“You already said—”

“I lied.”

June stared at him.

“Why?”

“Because I promised Evelyn.”

Caleb’s face hardened.

“You promised a dead woman to lie about her murder?”

Victor swallowed.

“She wasn’t dead when I made the promise.”

Silence.

Caleb stepped closer.

“My mother survived the lake?”

“For three days.”

Caleb stopped breathing.

Victor continued.

“She was pulled from the water by Lacey.”

June’s face changed.

“My sister?”

“Yes.”

“Then why was there a body?”

“There wasn’t.”

Caleb whispered, “There was a funeral.”

“Closed casket.”

Caleb remembered Adrian’s funeral.

Also closed.

A pattern.

“Where did Evelyn go?”

“Lacey hid her.”

June sat down slowly.

“My sister was fourteen.”

“She was brave.”

“What happened after three days?”

Victor looked toward Caleb.

“Margaret found them.”

June’s eyes filled.

“What did she do?”

Victor’s voice became quieter.

“She threatened Lacey’s family.”

Caleb stared.

“And my mother?”

“She agreed to disappear.”

“Why?”

“To protect you.”

That contradicted everything.

Caleb remembered the cassette.

Caleb has to stay.

Victor explained.

“Evelyn knew Margaret would never let her take you because Warren believed you were his biological heir.”

“But she thought I wasn’t hers.”

“She was confused. Afraid. She had partial medical records.”

“Where did she go?”

Victor looked away.

“I lost her.”

“You expect me to believe that?”

“I spent years searching.”

“And Gabriel?”

“He found her before I did.”

Caleb’s heart accelerated.

“Is she alive?”

Victor said nothing.

“Is my mother alive?”

Before Victor could answer, every light in the conference room went out.

Emergency lights flashed red.

Thomas drew his weapon.

A voice came through the building speakers.

Gabriel.

“Caleb.”

Everyone froze.

“You keep asking whether Evelyn is alive.”

Caleb looked upward.

“Where is Elara?”

Gabriel ignored him.

“You should be asking why your mother never came back.”

The building doors locked electronically.

Thomas ran toward the control panel.

Gabriel continued.

“She had twenty-nine years.”

Caleb’s face tightened.

“She could have called.”

June whispered, “He’s trying to turn you against her.”

Gabriel laughed through the speakers.

“No, June.”

A pause.

“I’m trying to prepare him.”

“For what?” Caleb shouted.

May you like

Gabriel answered:

“For meeting her.”
