Chapter 5 - THE MAN WHO DECIDED SIX MINUTES WERE TOO EXPENSIVE
Julian Vale had been more than Marcus’s uncle.
He became Marcus’s guardian after Marcus’s father died.
He taught him how to read contracts, control a boardroom, and never reveal fear in front of an opponent.
After Helena’s death, Julian moved into the mansion for three months.
He sat beside Lily when she cried.
He arranged the funeral.
He introduced Marcus to Cassandra at a charity gala the following year.
The entire relationship had been prepared by the man Marcus trusted as family.
Detective Bennett obtained the clinic access archive.
The camera footage had been damaged but not completely erased.
A black Vale vehicle arrived at 1:17 a.m.
Julian entered using Marcus’s private code.
He remained inside for eighteen minutes.
Helena died at 1:31.
Julian left four minutes later.
Dr. Pike’s medical chart showed that Helena required an immediate blood transfusion and emergency surgery.
Both had been prepared.
The transfusion was canceled at 1:24.
The operating team was dismissed at 1:26.
Julian’s vehicle was still outside.
Marcus watched the silent footage in Detective Bennett’s office.
His uncle entered the treatment room.
Helena lifted one hand toward him.
Julian looked down at her.
Then he opened the document case Grant had removed from the crash.
The camera captured his lips moving.
No sound remained.
Helena shook her head.
Julian left the room.
Pike canceled the treatment.
The motive appeared inside Helena’s trust records.
She had discovered that Julian and Cassandra were using the Children’s Harbor Foundation to move Vale company money into private developments.
Grant helped conceal the transfers inside security expenses.
Helena planned to force Julian from the board.
The evidence would also place Marcus’s companies under federal examination.
Julian believed Helena’s disclosure would destroy the family.
He allowed her to die because a living witness cost more than a funeral.
Cassandra entered Marcus’s life afterward to locate the hidden trust evidence and gain influence over Lily.
Julian promised her control of the foundation and part of Vale Global.
She planned to take more.
Every conspirator believed another person would carry the final consequence.
Grant believed Cassandra would protect him.
Cassandra believed Julian would make her Lily’s guardian.
Julian believed Marcus’s violent reputation would prevent anyone from investigating openly.
They had all used Marcus’s power while hiding the truth from him.
Marcus met Julian inside Vale Global’s boardroom with Detective Bennett’s permission.
The room occupied the top floor of a Manhattan tower.
Glass walls revealed the city beneath them.
Julian stood near the windows wearing a charcoal suit.
“You brought police into a family matter,” he said.
“You stopped Helena’s treatment.”
Julian did not deny being at the clinic.
“She had internal injuries.”
“The doctors believed surgery could save her.”
“They could not promise it.”
“You canceled the transfusion.”
“I prevented chaos.”
Marcus stared at him.
“My wife was bleeding.”
“She intended to expose every company connected to you.”
“She intended to expose theft.”
“She was emotional.”
“You drugged her.”
“Pike managed her condition.”
“You used him to make her look unstable.”
Julian turned from the window.
“I saved Vale Global.”
“You saved your control.”
“I saved Lily’s inheritance.”
“You built a custody operation around her.”
“That was Cassandra.”
“You introduced her to me.”
“She was supposed to provide stability.”
“She fed my daughter from a dog bowl.”
Julian’s expression remained cold.
“No one authorized that.”
The sentence revealed the way he viewed cruelty.
Not as wrong.
As unauthorized.
“Did you tell Pike to stop treatment?” Marcus asked.
Julian looked toward Detective Bennett’s concealed recording device.
“You are not wearing a wire.”
Marcus opened his jacket.
“No.”
Julian relaxed slightly.
The room itself was recording through a court authorized system.
Marcus did not need to deceive him personally.
“Helena gave you a choice,” Julian said. “Your wife or the company protecting thousands of employees.”
“No. She gave you evidence of your crimes.”
“She would have taken Lily into hiding.”
“She was protecting her.”
“From you.”
Marcus absorbed the words.
Helena had feared what his world made possible.
That fear did not justify Julian killing her.
It did force Marcus to face why her warnings had been believable to others.
“I should have changed before she needed to hide evidence inside a dog bowl,” Marcus said.
Julian’s eyes narrowed.
“You are becoming weak.”
“No.”
Marcus looked toward the city.
“I am becoming expensive to control.”
Julian moved toward the door.
Federal agents entered before he reached it.
Detective Bennett presented the warrant.
Julian remained calm until she named the charges connected to Helena’s death.
Then he looked at Marcus.
“You are destroying the company your father built.”
Marcus answered quietly.
“You confused the company with yourself.”
Julian was arrested.
Vale Global’s board called an emergency meeting.
Several directors demanded Marcus resign because the investigation exposed illegal accounts connected to his private organization.
Marcus agreed.
He surrendered temporary management to an independent committee.
He placed Lily’s voting trust beyond his own control.
Cassandra had expected him to fight for ownership.
Julian had expected him to use threats.
Marcus gave the investigators everything.
Rachel Stone, his attorney, warned him that cooperation could lead to criminal charges.
“I know.”
“You may serve time.”
“I know.”
“Lily may remain under court supervision.”
“I know.”
Rachel studied him.
“You are giving up every form of protection you understand.”
Marcus looked through the hospital window where Lily sat beside Scout.
“No. I am removing the things they kept using as weapons around her.”
The medical laboratory called.
The sedative Cassandra placed in Lily’s food matched the drug found in Helena’s preserved blood sample.
Dr. Pike had used the same formula on both.
Police located him inside a foundation clinic in Connecticut.
He surrendered without resistance.
During questioning, Pike offered to testify against Julian and Cassandra.
He also revealed that the dog bowl punishment had been tested on another child.
A boy named Noah Hollis.
Grant’s eight year old son.
Grant had not joined the conspiracy only for money.
