Chapter 5 - THE SECRET INSIDE AURORA’S MEDICAL FILE
Gabriel was arrested at the airfield.
Vincent began cooperating within hours.
His first statement minimized everything.
His second blamed Gabriel.
His third finally included Sofia.
Vincent admitted arranging the mechanic who altered her brakes.
Gabriel ordered the operation after Sofia discovered the false security companies.
They intended only to frighten her into silence, Vincent claimed.
Messages recovered from Gabriel’s devices contradicted him.
MAKE THE MOUNTAIN FINISH IT.
NO SURVIVORS.
The case around Sofia’s death had been buried for six years.
Now the vehicle records, financial payments, and Isold’s preserved files allowed investigators to reopen it.
Marco listened to the evidence without speaking.
He did not threaten Gabriel.
He did not send men to the detention center.
He sat beside Aurora while Agent Donnelly explained that legal proceedings could take years.
Aurora asked:
“Did Uncle Gabriel know I was in the car?”
Silence filled the room.
Marco turned toward Isold.
“You said Sofia was alone.”
Isold’s expression changed.
Aurora heard the change in her breathing.
“I was in the car?”
Isold slowly sat across from her.
“You were found near the road after the crash.”
Marco stood.
“What?”
“Sofia took Aurora with her that evening.”
“My reports said she was with a nurse.”
“The report was altered.”
Aurora touched the blindfold resting around her neck.
“What happened to me?”
Isold explained that Aurora had been born with limited vision, not complete blindness.
She could distinguish light and large shapes.
After the crash, she suffered head trauma and chemical exposure from a damaged container placed inside the vehicle.
The chemical was meant to accelerate the fire.
It damaged her remaining vision.
Marco stared at Isold.
“You knew.”
“I suspected. Sofia’s hidden medical file confirmed it.”
“When?”
“Three months ago.”
“You kept that from us?”
“I needed the original records authenticated.”
Aurora turned away.
“You both keep deciding what I am allowed to know.”
Isold’s face tightened.
“You are right.”
Marco looked at her, surprised.
Isold continued.
“I believed protecting an investigation justified waiting. It did not justify taking your history from you.”
Aurora’s voice broke.
“Can my sight come back?”
A specialist reviewed the records.
The damage was permanent.
Experimental treatment might improve light perception someday, but no physician could promise it.
Marco wanted to fund every possible procedure immediately.
Aurora refused.
“I am not a problem you can purchase away.”
“I want to help.”
“Then ask what I want.”
Marco forced himself to wait.
Aurora turned toward Isold.
“Did Mama know Gabriel wanted me?”
“She knew someone did.”
“Did she hire you because she thought Papa could not protect me?”
“Yes.”
Marco lowered his head.
Aurora asked another question.
“Why did you stay after you found the evidence?”
Isold looked toward Marco.
“Because the contract ended when Sofia died.”
“That is not an answer.”
Isold’s disciplined expression finally cracked.
“I stayed because I loved you.”
Aurora began crying silently.
Isold did not reach for her.
She waited.
Aurora crossed the room by sound and placed both arms around her.
Isold closed her eyes.
Marco watched the woman he had treated as furniture hold his daughter with more gentleness than most people in his world had ever shown.
Later that night, Marco met with federal prosecutors and his attorney.
He offered evidence against Gabriel’s international network, Vincent’s security operation, and officials paid by Bellini companies.
In return, he requested no immunity.
Only structured protection for Aurora and employees uninvolved in crimes.
Prosecutors made no promise about his sentence.
Marco understood.
Cooperation was not innocence.
