Chapter 5 - THE WOMAN NATHAN PLANNED TO BLAME

Vanessa did not leave with Nathan.

She remained at Ashford Hall after the guests moved into private meetings.

Her confidence had vanished.

Without Nathan beside her, she looked younger.

Not innocent.

Simply less protected than she had imagined.

Ruth brought her into a side library.

I joined them with two independent attorneys.

Vanessa stared at the black envelope.

“What else is inside?”

“A recording.”

“Of what?”

“Nathan speaking with his financial adviser.”

Her fingers tightened around the clutch.

“Play it.”

Ruth warned her that anything she said afterward could affect legal proceedings.

Vanessa nodded.

The recording began.

Nathan’s voice came through clearly.

“If the transfer is challenged, Blair Meridian takes responsibility.”

A man answered:

“Vanessa owns the majority.”

“Exactly.”

“She may cooperate.”

“She will not have enough information.”

“What if Clara exposes the company?”

Nathan laughed.

“Then Vanessa becomes the greedy mistress who forged documents to steal from my wife. Everyone will believe it.”

Vanessa covered her mouth.

The recording continued.

“What happens to Vanessa afterward?”

“She disappears from my life with whatever sentence the court gives her.”

Ruth stopped the file.

Vanessa sat completely still.

I did not comfort her.

She had spent eighteen months participating in my humiliation.

She had entered the gala wearing Nathan’s hand around her waist as if I had already been erased.

But she had not designed the entire financial scheme.

Nathan had.

“He told me you were divorcing him,” she said.

“I was not.”

“He said the council rejected you.”

“They did not.”

“He said you were using his father’s trust to control him.”

“That part was true.”

Vanessa looked at me.

“You admit it?”

“I used the trust to prevent him from taking money he did not own.”

She lowered her eyes.

“I signed the company papers.”

“Did you read them?”

“Some.”

“Did you know council money would enter the account?”

“I knew Nathan wanted to move funds temporarily.”

“Did you ask whether he had authority?”

“No.”

“Why?”

Vanessa’s voice became small.

“Because the answer might have ended everything I wanted.”

That was the first honest sentence she gave me.

She agreed to surrender her devices and provide access to the records she controlled.

Her cooperation did not erase her conduct.

It allowed investigators to distinguish what Nathan told her from what she knowingly helped him do.

Nathan reacted before midnight.

He attempted to enter three Whitaker accounts.

All were frozen.

He ordered company staff to send funds through an emergency vendor payment.

The controller refused.

He called Marcus Vale and demanded access to Ashford Hall.

Marcus documented the call.

Then Nathan drove to our penthouse.

The building access system rejected him.

The apartment had been purchased through my trust before our marriage.

His right to enter had been suspended under an emergency court order after he threatened retaliation and attempted unauthorized financial access.

He called me seventeen times.

I answered once with Ruth and my attorney listening.

“You locked me out of my home.”

“The residence belongs to the trust.”

“I am your husband.”

“Not for much longer.”

“You think these people love you?”

“No.”

“Then why are they standing behind you?”

“They trust the records.”

He laughed bitterly.

“When this ends, you will be alone.”

I looked across the library at Vanessa surrendering the bracelet Nathan had given her.

“I was alone every night you came home and expected me to pretend not to smell her perfume.”

Nathan became silent.

Then he whispered:

“I can still destroy you.”

I ended the call.

He believed destruction required one dramatic act.

May you like

He had never understood the power of removing one signature at a time.

Continue to the next part: Nathan’s retaliation exposes forged contracts, secret debts, and the threat he made against Clara after learning Vanessa had begun cooperating.
