Chapter 5

Every eye in the ballroom turned toward Edward Collins.

For years, he had been Grant Whitmore's most trusted financial adviser.

He had attended every board meeting.

Managed every major acquisition.

Even helped organize the wedding.

Edward smiled politely.

"There must be some misunderstanding."

Lena didn't respond.

She walked to the screen and changed the slide.

A timeline appeared.

Every missing dollar.

Every fake company.

Every transfer.

Every signature.

The pattern was impossible to ignore.

Grant stared at the screen.

"You approved every one of these transactions."

Edward remained calm.

"I approved what my staff prepared."

Lena shook her head.

"No."

"You created the staff."

She clicked again.

Employee records appeared.

Five accountants.

Three financial managers.

Two legal consultants.

Every one of them had resigned within months.

Grant frowned.

"I remember."

"They all left unexpectedly."

"They didn't leave."

Lena answered quietly.

"They were fired after questioning your reports."

The guests whispered again.

Edward finally stopped smiling.

"You're making serious accusations."

Lena met his eyes.

"I never make accusations."

"I present evidence."

She held up a small flash drive.

"This contains every deleted email recovered from your backup server."

Edward's expression cracked for the first time.

Grant noticed immediately.

"You deleted company emails?"

Edward didn't answer.

Lena continued.

"You created shell corporations."

"You moved company funds through twelve accounts."

"You used Vanessa's name because she trusted you."

Vanessa burst into tears.

"I thought they were investment papers."

"You told me I was helping Grant reduce taxes."

Edward looked at her coldly.

"You signed them willingly."

"I never read them!"

Vanessa cried.

Grant slowly stepped away from both of them.

He felt sick.

Not because of the money.

Because the woman he was about to marry had hidden years of financial secrets—even if she hadn't fully understood them.

Edward suddenly laughed.

A slow, confident laugh.

"You still can't prove I kept the money."

Lena nodded.

"You're right."

"I couldn't."

She pressed the final button.

The ballroom screen changed one last time.

A luxury beachfront mansion in the Cayman Islands.

A private yacht.

Three offshore accounts.

Each connected to Edward through hidden ownership documents recovered only forty-eight hours earlier.

Grant whispered,

"My God..."

Edward's confidence disappeared.

Police officers entered the ballroom.

No one had noticed them arrive.

The lead detective walked straight toward Edward.

"Edward Collins..."

"You're under arrest for wire fraud, embezzlement, money laundering, and conspiracy."

The room erupted.

Edward looked at Lena with hatred.

"You spent years chasing me."

Lena answered calmly.

"I spent years chasing the truth."

As officers placed handcuffs on Edward, he glanced toward Vanessa.

"I told you never to keep those documents."

Grant closed his eyes.

That single sentence confirmed everything.

Vanessa collapsed into a chair, sobbing.

She had been manipulated.

But her signatures had nearly destroyed Grant's company.

As Edward was led away, the detective turned back toward Grant.

"We'll need a statement."

Grant nodded silently.

Then he looked at Lena.

"If you hadn't refused to quit..."

"I would've lost everything."

Lena gave a small smile.

"I didn't stay because of the money."

"I stayed because innocent people deserved the truth."

Grant looked toward the wedding altar.

The flowers.

The candles.

The string quartet.

Everything felt meaningless now.

He slowly removed his wedding ring from the ceremony box and placed it on the table.

"There won't be a wedding today."

The guests watched in stunned silence.

But Lena wasn't looking at the broken ceremony.

She was looking at her parents.

Richard and Susan stood together, unable to meet her eyes.

For the first time in eleven years...

They realized the daughter they had abandoned hadn't come back for revenge.

She had come back with integrity.

And that hurt far more than anger ever could.

The next morning, Richard appeared unannounced outside Lena's office.

He carried nothing except a worn envelope.

Inside was a single photograph.

A picture of Lena on her high school graduation day... standing proudly before they had thrown her out.

His voice trembled.

"I've spent eleven years wishing I could take that night back."

Lena looked at the photo for a long moment.

Then she quietly asked,

"If you had never needed anything from me..."

May you like

"Would you have come?"

Richard couldn't answer.
