Chapter 3 - THE SIGNATURE OF A DEAD NOTARY
The estate office was searched under a warrant that evening.
Inside a locked drawer, investigators found executed versions of several documents.
Ava’s signature appeared across every page.
The dates went back eight months.
One transferred control of her inheritance.
Another authorized the sale of two properties she owned before our marriage.
A third appointed Mother to make medical decisions if Ava became incapable.
Ava denied signing any of them.
The notary stamp belonged to Harold Pike.
Harold had handled family documents for decades.
There was one impossible problem.
He died six weeks before the earliest notarization date.
The forged signature was not sophisticated.
Someone had copied Ava’s handwriting from hospital consent forms and scanned Harold’s old seal.
Metadata showed the files were assembled on a computer assigned to Mother’s private office.
Her attorney claimed employees had access.
Investigators examined access logs instead of accepting either accusation or denial.
Lena provided another piece.
She had noticed Mother entering Ava’s room whenever I traveled.
Mother often carried vitamins, tea, and papers.
When Lena asked whether Ava needed assistance, Mother ordered her downstairs.
Three weeks before the office confrontation, Lena heard Ava say:
“I do not remember signing that.”
Mother answered:
“Memory becomes unreliable after trauma.”
Lena began taking notes.
She photographed pill containers and copied appointment dates.
“I should have called sooner,” she told Detective Monroe.
“Why didn’t you?”
“I was afraid of losing my job and housing.”
Lena lived in an apartment owned by the estate.
Mother had reminded her of that whenever she questioned Ava’s care.
Fear had silenced the only witness who entered the room regularly.
Her delay did not make her responsible for Margaret’s choices.
It did mean she had to explain why she waited.
She did so without presenting herself as a hero.
Meanwhile, Ava’s neurologist reviewed her records.
The file contained reports claiming severe cognitive decline.
Several notes described paranoia, poor judgment, and aggressive resistance to medication.
The physician whose name appeared beneath those notes was Dr. Calvin Reese.
He was the same doctor listed on the sedative bottle.
Dr. Reese had conducted only two video appointments with Ava.
Mother remained in the room during both.
Ava said she tried to ask for privacy.
Mother claimed private conversations triggered panic attacks.
The doctor accepted her explanation.
He prescribed the sedative to Margaret, not Ava, after Mother said caregiving caused anxiety.
He denied telling anyone to place it in Ava’s vitamins.
His clinical judgment faced review because he failed to interview a vulnerable patient independently.
No evidence yet showed he joined the financial scheme.
Accuracy mattered.
A careless doctor was not automatically a conspirator.
The financial records revealed the motive.
Ava inherited twenty two percent of Whitmore Holdings from her father.
Her shares carried special voting rights.
If transferred into the proposed trust, Mother could control the family company despite owning less than half of its equity.
The company was preparing to sell a medical technology division.
Ava’s vote could determine whether the sale proceeded.
She opposed it because the buyer planned major layoffs.
Mother supported it because her personal trust would receive an enormous performance payment.
The documents were not only about inheritance.
They were about controlling a vote before Ava recovered enough to participate.
Then investigators found an email written five days after Ava’s crash.
MARGARET: HER CONDITION MAY GIVE US THE AUTHORITY WE NEEDED.
The recipient was my mother’s attorney, Charles Wynn.
His reply contained only three words.
