Chapter 13 - THE ACCOUNT THAT SHOULD NOT HAVE EXISTED
I thought the trust story was over.
Then Jonathan asked Dana:
“Did you check Cedar Operating Reserve?”
She frowned.
“There is no operating reserve in our file.”
Jonathan went silent.
“What?”
He asked again.
“Nothing called Cedar Operating Reserve?”
“No.”
He looked at me through the screen.
“That is a problem.”
Schedule Cedar produced rent from a commercial parcel south of Denver.
For years, distributions were supposed to remain invested.
But one small reserve account existed for taxes and maintenance.
Jonathan had reviewed it annually until six years earlier.
Then Mountain Peak told him administration had transferred to another custodian.
Which custodian?
Reed Continuity Services.
I had never heard of it.
Robert said:
“Neither have I.”
Jonathan stared at him.
“For once, I believe you.”
That got everyone’s attention.
Reed Continuity Services was formed six years ago.
Registered in Wyoming.
Manager:
J. Reed.
Jonathan denied.
“I did not form it.”
Signature:
Jonathan Reed.
Not his.
The company received approximately $1.2 million in accumulated Cedar reserve funds over six years.
Not the $10.8 million principal.
Operating surplus.
Where did it go?
Mostly legitimate property expenses.
Taxes.
Repairs.
Insurance.
Management fees.
But $430,000 transferred to:
Briar Legacy Management LLC.
Who owned that?
Unknown behind a registered agent.
Then one payment from Briar Legacy to:
Robert Reed Advisory.
$60,000.
My father stared.
“I received that.”
“When?”
“Three years ago.”
“For what?”
“Consulting on a warehouse lease.”
“Did you know the money came from Cedar?”
“No.”
Invoice trail showed he had done real work.
He inspected properties.
Negotiated vendors.
He was paid market rate.
That made it more complicated.
Somebody controlling a hidden company had hired Robert legitimately using money from a trust he was prohibited from controlling.
Why?
Maybe to keep him close.
Maybe because he had useful skills.
Then Helen received two payments.
$24,000 total.
Event planning consultation.
She remembered.
A property manager hired her to coordinate tenant appreciation events.
Again, real work.
The hidden administrator had been paying my parents without telling them where money originated.
Why?
Jonathan’s face hardened.
“Because somebody wanted them financially connected to Cedar.”
If later discovered, it could look like Robert and Helen had secretly benefited.
Shared culpability.
Maybe.
Or ordinary vendor choices.
We did not know.
Then Dana pulled corporate records.
Briar Legacy Management owner:
Cedar Operations Holdings.
Manager:
J.R. Fiduciary.
Another layer.
No obvious person.
Then a bank signature card surfaced.
Reed Continuity Services.
Authorized signer:
Jonathan Reed.
Signature false.
Secondary signer:
Robert Reed.
My father went white.
“I never signed.”
Signature looked genuine.
Date:
Six years earlier.
Where was Robert that day?
Hospital.
Hip replacement.
Sedated.
Helen had been with him.
Could someone have used his hospital paperwork?
Possibly.
Then a witness:
Matthew Ross.
The same surname as deceased Alpine officer Marjorie Ross.
Relationship?
Her father.
Former estate attorney.
Dead five years.
Matthew had handled Margaret Reed’s final trust paperwork.
He might have had everyone’s signatures.
Jonathan whispered:
“Matthew knew Cedar.”
Then Dana checked.
Matthew Ross had created Reed Continuity Services as legal organizer.
Maybe not fraud.
Maybe Margaret instructed him.
Why hide from Jonathan?
Unknown.
Then a letter appeared in old paper archives.
Margaret Reed to Matthew Ross.
If Jonathan becomes unavailable, create a separate continuity structure. Do not give Robert control. Do not give Thomas knowledge before the children are old enough.
So Reed Continuity Services may have been legitimate.
But why use false signatures?
Maybe signatures were authorized by old powers?
We needed originals.
Then one line:
Use Alternate Steward B if family conflict activates early.
