Chapter 1 - THE CHILDREN BENEATH THE MANSION

“What did you do to my children?”

Nathan Harrington’s voice broke as he dropped to his knees on the freezing basement floor.

Ethan reached him first.

The nine year old boy threw both arms around Nathan’s neck and buried his face against the shoulder of his gray business suit. Emma pressed herself against Nathan’s chest, struggling to breathe through silent sobs. Five year old Noah wrapped both arms around his father’s waist as though Nathan might disappear if he loosened his grip.

Nathan crushed all three children against him.

Their light blue pajamas were thin. Their bare feet were cold. A pair of narrow blankets lay abandoned beside the concrete wall.

Several feet away, Victoria stood beneath the basement light wearing a fitted teal evening dress and black heels.

A leather riding crop hung from one hand.

For twelve years, magazines had called her graceful.

Compassionate.

The perfect mother.

Now she stared at her husband with the expression of someone interrupted during a private inconvenience.

Nathan’s fourteen hour flight from London no longer existed in his mind.

Neither did the leather briefcase upstairs.

Neither did the negotiations waiting for him in the morning.

There were only three trembling bodies inside his arms and the woman who had placed them there.

Victoria moved the riding crop behind her leg.

“They were being disciplined,” she said sharply. “Stop frightening them.”

Nathan became completely still.

His blue eyes moved from Victoria to the crop.

Then back to his children.

Ethan lifted his face slowly.

“She said we wouldn’t eat if we told you.”

The boy whispered so quietly that Nathan barely heard him.

Emma tightened her hands in the back of Nathan’s suit.

Noah looked toward Victoria and immediately hid his face.

Nathan closed his eyes for one second.

Something violent moved through his jaw.

When he opened them again, his expression had changed.

The terror remained.

The rage remained.

But both had become controlled.

“Did they eat tonight?” he asked.

Victoria sighed.

“They refused dinner because they were having a tantrum.”

Ethan shook his head against Nathan’s shoulder.

“She took it away.”

“Because you threw your plate.”

“I dropped the spoon.”

Victoria stepped forward.

“Do not encourage this performance.”

Nathan shifted the children behind his body and rose to his full height.

He picked up the riding crop from where Victoria had dropped it and held it between two fingers.

“You threatened them with hunger.”

“They are lying.”

Nathan looked at the basement door.

“Walter.”

The old butler stood at the top of the narrow concrete stairs.

His silver hair was disordered. His hands shook around a ring of keys and Nathan’s tablet.

Walter had served the Harrington family for eighteen years. Nathan had never seen him look so ashamed.

“Come down,” Nathan said.

Walter descended slowly.

Victoria’s face tightened.

“You had no permission to enter this room.”

Walter stopped several steps above her.

Nathan looked at the tablet.

“What is that?”

Walter swallowed.

“The basement security feed, sir.”

Victoria’s head turned sharply.

“That camera has been disconnected for months.”

“No, ma’am.”

Walter’s voice cracked.

“The visible camera was disconnected. The original system still uploads to the emergency server.”

Victoria lunged toward the tablet.

Nathan stepped between them and caught her wrist before she reached it.

He did not squeeze.

He did not strike her.

He simply forced her hand down.

“Do not touch the evidence.”

“Nathan, listen to me.”

He removed his smartphone and started recording.

“I am listening.”

“They have been impossible since you left. Ethan lies. Emma copies him. Noah screams whenever I enforce a boundary.”

Ethan flinched behind his father.

Nathan saw it.

“Explain it to the police.”

The color left Victoria’s face.

“You would call the police on your own wife?”

“I am calling them for my children.”

Walter handed him the tablet.

The live image showed the basement from a high corner.

The camera had captured Nathan entering.

It had captured Victoria raising the riding crop.

It had captured Ethan placing himself in front of Emma.

Nathan stopped the playback before the children saw more.

He called emergency services and gave the address.

Victoria began pacing.

“This will destroy the family.”

Nathan looked at her.

“You locked our children in a basement.”

“They embarrassed me at the foundation dinner.”

“They are children.”

“They accused me of stealing.”

Walter’s eyes lifted.

Nathan heard the word.

“Stealing what?”

Victoria became silent.

Distant sirens began cutting through the night.

Emma reached for Nathan’s hand.

“Are you leaving again?”

He dropped to his knees and pulled all three children against him.

“Never without you.”

Nathan looked over their heads at Victoria.

She had spent years believing his absences made her ruler of the house.

At 1:03 that morning, the power inside the Harrington mansion changed hands without Nathan raising his voice.

Continue to the next part: Police secure the basement, and the first camera files reveal that Victoria’s punishment had not begun that night.
