Chapter 17 - The Last Recording

Michael’s appeal created one final evidentiary review of Walter’s files.

Among archived devices was an audio message Walter recorded but never sent to me.

Date:

December 31, four years earlier.

Months after Ethan died.

Days before Walter’s fatal heart attack.

The prosecutor asked whether I wanted to hear.

I almost said no.

Then yes.

Walter’s voice was older than I remembered.

“Amelia, I don’t know if I’ll send this.”

Pause.

“I helped Michael do something unforgivable.”

My hands shook.

“I thought Ethan was already gone and nothing I did could change that. I thought saving Michael from prison would save what remained of family.”

He breathed.

“He brought another boy home the next day. I told him to take the child back. He said if he did, police would connect everything.”

Another pause.

“I did not call.”

Walter cried.

A powerful man crying alone into phone.

“I signed the first trust verification because I was afraid. I told myself I was protecting Noah by keeping Michael calm. That was a lie.”

Then:

“The boy asks for his mother in sleep.”

Sarah listened later.

She cried for hours.

Walter continued:

“I am going to tell the bank after New Year. Then the police. Amelia deserves truth.”

He never did.

He died January 3.

Natural heart attack.

The recording did not change Michael’s conviction materially.

It confirmed timeline.

It also answered why Walter’s DNA was on Ethan.

He helped move body.

Why trust fraud began.

Walter signed first verification.

Why Noah remained.

Adults kept choosing tomorrow.

Tomorrow I’ll report.

Tomorrow I’ll fix.

Tomorrow I’ll return money.

Tomorrow.

Children lived consequences today.

I asked prosecutor:

“Could Walter have been charged if alive?”

“Likely serious obstruction and fraud exposure, possibly accessory after fact depending evidence.”

Not murder.

Good.

Accuracy.

I did not forgive him because dead.

I also stopped imagining him as equal to Michael.

He arrived after fatal assault.

He failed Ethan catastrophically.

He did not strike him.

Different wrongs deserve different names.

Sarah said:

“I hate him.”

“Okay.”

“Do you?”

“Sometimes.”

“Do you hate Victoria?”

“Yes.”

“Even if she didn’t know?”

“Yes.”

She smiled.

“Nice to know doctors can be unreasonable.”

“Constantly.”

Then she said:

“I’m thinking of moving.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“Charlottesville.”

Job promotion.

Bigger apartment.

Good schools.

Noah liked art program.

I smiled.

“That’s good.”

“You okay?”

“No.”

She laughed.

“You love him.”

“Yes.”

“He loves you.”

“I know.”

“Doesn’t mean we stay fifteen minutes away forever.”

“I know.”

There it was.

Healthy attachment requires letting people leave.

Michael never learned.

I had to.

They moved six months later.

We video called sometimes.

Noah mailed drawings.
