Chapter 4 - Grace’s Video inside the Storage Box

Sarah’s storage unit stood near the industrial district beside the river.

Karen’s key opened it.

Police entered first.

The space contained two plastic bins, a child sized bicycle, winter clothes, and an old wooden chest sealed with red wax.

My name appeared across the lid.

Marcus Blackwell.

Deliver only after Victor Blackwell is confirmed dead.

Sarah had kept the chest through six apartment moves.

Inside were photographs of Emma from every year of her life.

First birthday.

First day of school.

A missing front tooth.

A homemade Halloween costume.

Sarah had documented the childhood I never saw.

One envelope held letters Emma wrote to a father she believed lived far away.

Dear Daddy, I can read all the library books for first grade.

Dear Daddy, Mommy says your eyes look serious but not mean.

Dear Daddy, I lost another tooth. Do you know where our teeth go if the fairy cannot find our house?

I stopped reading.

Caleb closed the storage door so the officers outside could not see my face.

“You do not need to finish now.”

“Yes, I do.”

The chest contained a small video recorder.

Grace appeared on the screen wearing a hospital gown. Her face was pale, and the sounds of medical equipment surrounded her.

The date was the morning before the twins were born.

“Marcus, if you are watching this, then Sarah kept Emma safe long enough for the truth to reach you.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“I am sorry for what I am about to do.”

Grace explained that Victor approached her during the sixth month of pregnancy.

He showed her a guardianship agreement carrying my signature and a recording suggesting I supported placing a medically fragile child under family control.

Emma had shown a small cardiac irregularity during prenatal imaging.

Victor said Baby B would be taken to Blackwell Medical immediately after delivery.

Grace believed him because she knew what happened to my cousin.

“I should have confronted you,” she said. “I was afraid Victor would move before I could prove the documents were false.”

She asked Sarah to prepare a private escape.

If both children were healthy and Victor’s order never arrived, they would cancel it.

If Grace became incapacitated and Victor attempted custody, Sarah would leave with Baby B.

During the emergency delivery, Victor’s physician arrived with transfer papers.

Grace activated the plan.

Then she discovered the deeper reason.

A prenatal genetic comparison showed Emma carried a rare cardiac marker associated with the Vale family.

Lily did not.

The marker alone did not prove paternity.

It suggested I had inherited genetic material from someone related to Owen Vale’s family.

Victor was not genetically related to the marker.

Grace began investigating my birth records.

She found that my newborn blood sample had been replaced when I was three days old.

“Victor told me Emma’s medical file would make Marcus question everything,” Grace said. “He said the child could destroy the company, the trust, and the name Marcus had spent his life defending.”

She believed Victor wanted Emma inside Blackwell Medical so her genetic records could be sealed or altered.

The concealment was not only about a heart murmur.

Emma’s blood could expose the possibility that Victor Blackwell was not my biological father.

Grace ended the recording with a warning.

“Owen knows more than he admits. But I do not know whether he helped Victor or whether Victor was afraid of him too.”

The video stopped.

Caleb looked toward me.

Owen Vale was twelve years older than I was.

His father, Daniel Vale, had been Victor’s closest business partner before dying in a boating accident when I was an infant.

Family histories said Daniel had no children.

If the marker came from the Vale family, several explanations remained.

My mother could have carried the gene.

The laboratory could have been wrong.

Or my entire birth record had been constructed.

A second video showed Sarah sitting at a kitchen table three weeks before her death.

She appeared thinner than in the photographs.

“Victor is dead,” she said. “The protection period is over. I am taking Emma to Marcus.”

Sarah said someone had begun following her after she requested the original genetic report.

She recorded license plates, phone calls, and names.

One name appeared repeatedly.

Peter Shaw.

Owen’s missing assistant.

Sarah planned to meet Evelyn Ross and give her the chest.

The meeting never occurred.

Her car left the road the night before.

Police had classified the death as an accident caused by rain.

The chest contained Sarah’s route map.

She planned to drive on the interstate.

The crash happened on an isolated county road thirty miles away.

“She was forced off route,” Officer Price said.

A final envelope contained Grace’s original instructions to Evelyn.

Upon Victor’s death, Evelyn was to contact me directly and reveal Emma within twenty four hours.

Victor died three months earlier.

Evelyn never contacted me.

I looked at her.

She stood near the back of the storage unit with her hands folded.

“Why?”

Her face lost color.

“I received no confirmation that Sarah was alive.”

“The instruction did not depend on Sarah.”

“There was a second condition.”

“What condition?”

“Grace required me to verify that Owen Vale no longer controlled Blackwell security.”

“Owen became chairman after Victor died.”

“Yes.”

“So you chose the company over my daughter.”

“I believed revealing Emma while Owen controlled surveillance would place her in danger.”

“She was starving in a basement.”

Evelyn closed her eyes.

“I did not know where Karen took her.”

“You knew a child existed.”

“Yes.”

“You let me remain ignorant.”

“Yes.”

The answer was quiet.

It was also complete.

Before I could respond, Caleb’s phone vibrated.

The security team had found Peter Shaw’s abandoned vehicle near the river.

Inside was Sarah’s missing audio recorder.

One file remained undeleted.

Owen’s voice said, “Do not bring the child to Marcus until we know whether he carries Daniel’s marker too.”

Continue to the next part: The missing recording connects Owen directly to the genetic secret Grace believed Victor would kill to protect.
