Chapter 5 - THE MEN WEARING HOSPITAL BADGES
The forged order instructed staff to transfer Elena to a private neurological clinic.
It carried Dr. Chen’s copied signature.
A transport team arrived at seven twenty that evening.
Two men wore medical uniforms.
A third carried a clipboard and remained near the elevator.
Hospital staff nearly released Elena.
The room number was correct.
The diagnosis sounded legitimate.
The transfer code passed the first digital check.
Then Sophie looked through the doorway.
Her body went completely still.
“That’s him.”
Vincent followed her gaze.
The man near the elevator had a pale scar running down one cheek.
Carlos Vega.
Sophie stepped behind Vincent.
“He hurt Mama.”
Vincent did not approach Carlos.
He pressed the emergency call button and informed hospital security that a child had identified a possible attacker.
Carlos saw the movement.
He ran toward the stairwell.
Hospital officers followed.
One medical impostor surrendered immediately. The other attempted to leave through a service corridor and was stopped by local police arriving from the flower shop case.
No shots.
No private chase.
No body disappeared.
Carlos was detained in the parking structure after falling while crossing a maintenance barrier. His injuries were minor.
The forged transfer order became evidence.
The phone inside his pocket contained messages from Anthony Russo Junior.
MOVE ELENA BEFORE SHE SPEAKS TO THE OLD MAN.
THE CHILD STAYS.
Carlos asked for protection before giving a statement.
He believed Tony intended to kill every outsider connected to the attack.
Investigators placed him in secure custody.
Sophie sat beside Elena afterward.
“I saw him.”
Elena held her carefully.
“You did the right thing.”
“I was scared.”
“Doing the right thing does not mean you were not scared.”
Vincent remained outside the room.
Elena noticed.
“You can come in.”
He entered and stopped near the wall.
Sophie looked up.
“Did the police take him?”
“Yes.”
“Will your men hurt him?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
“Because then he could not tell the truth in court.”
She considered that.
“Are your men bad?”
The question would have offended men who spent their lives protecting Vincent.
He answered honestly.
“Some have done bad things because I allowed a world where obedience mattered more than questions.”
“Is Marco bad?”
Marco stood beyond the glass.
“He has done things he regrets. He is helping investigators now.”
“What about you?”
Elena watched Vincent closely.
“Yes,” he said. “I have hurt people and frightened people. I am trying to tell the truth about it.”
Sophie looked toward her mother.
“Mama says sorry does not fix broken windows.”
“She is right.”
“You have to replace the window too.”
“Yes.”
“And the flowers.”
“Yes.”
“And Mama’s doctor bill.”
“I will provide money through the legal restitution process.”
Sophie frowned.
“That sounds boring.”
“It is.”
“Good.”
The child returned to her drawing.
Vincent felt something almost like relief.
She had not forgiven him.
She had simply asked a question and received an answer without performance.
Carlos’s statement arrived the next morning.
Anthony Russo hired him and Miguel Santos to enter Elena’s shop.
Their orders were to locate Daniel’s ledger, remove Elena, and leave Sophie alive as leverage.
Carlos claimed he never intended to kill Elena.
The medical evidence showed repeated blows capable of causing death.
Intent would be decided through evidence, not his preferred description.
Miguel remained missing.
Carlos also identified the man who delivered payment.
Tony Russo.
He met them inside a garage beneath the Golden Palm.
Security footage from that night had been deleted.
The backup system preserved a reflection inside the polished elevator doors.
Tony appeared holding red scarves.
Anthony stood beside him.
The same vehicle later carried Vincent to dinner.
The torn fabric beneath his seat had not been planted to implicate him.
It had fallen from Tony’s coat during the meeting.
The attack originated inside Vincent’s closest circle.
Tony’s location remained unknown.
Then Daniel’s ledger revealed a property outside Chicago registered to a Russo holding company.
A private hunting lodge.
Federal agents obtained a search warrant.
Tony was not inside.
Anthony was.
He surrendered without resistance.
Investigators found Maria’s medical files, Daniel’s stolen computer, and photographs of Elena and Sophie covering three years.
Tony had monitored them long before Daniel’s death.
One photograph showed Sophie leaving school.
Another showed Elena visiting Maria’s grave.
A third showed Vincent standing in the distance during the same cemetery visit.
Tony knew Vincent had seen Elena.
He feared recognition might occur before the trust reached its transfer date.
Anthony agreed to cooperate.
He admitted participating in Daniel’s death.
Daniel’s vehicle had not crossed the divider because of fatigue.
A mechanic working for Tony damaged the steering system.
Anthony followed Daniel to ensure the crash occurred.
The mechanic later died from an overdose.
Whether that death was connected required further evidence.
Anthony claimed Tony acted under Dominic’s original authority.
Dominic denied ordering Daniel’s death.
The men who had described themselves as family began placing responsibility into one another’s hands.
Grace found a video file on Daniel’s computer.
Daniel sat inside the flower shop after closing.
Elena was asleep upstairs.
“If you are watching this,” he said, “I failed to reach Vincent Torino.”
Daniel had discovered Elena’s identity six months before his death.
He planned to tell her after securing Maria’s trust records.
He feared Vincent would use blood to claim Sophie and pull both mother and child into his organization.
Daniel’s caution had not been entirely wrong.
He also recorded the reason he continued.
“Elena deserves the choice everyone stole from her. Vincent deserves the truth about Maria. Neither deserves another man deciding what they can survive.”
Vincent watched beside Elena.
She cried silently.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“He should have told me.”
“Yes.”
“He was protecting me.”
“He was also removing your choice.”
Elena looked at Vincent.
“You understand that now?”
“I am learning it repeatedly.”
The final section showed Daniel entering a Torino Hospitality warehouse.
Tony met him near the loading area.
Their conversation was recorded through Daniel’s coat.
Tony offered him two million dollars to destroy the ledger and move Elena out of Chicago.
Daniel refused.
Tony said:
“Maria refused too.”
Daniel asked whether Tony killed her.
Tony answered:
May you like
“I finished what Vincent’s fear began.”
